Union City is located on the ridge of the lower Palisades. Its cultural offerings range from local history to art and performance. Theaters, museums and parks showcase different sides of the city. Weehawken and Union City Reservoir Park adds a reservoir and a view of the New York City skyline.
Art, Theater and Local History
The William V. Musto Cultural Center houses an art museum, a history museum, an art gallery and a concert hall. The art museum has a permanent exhibition featuring works by well-known artists from the region, as well as works by historical artist Enid Bell. Individual exhibitions may change. The history museum traces Union City's development from its early years as a township through the city's founding in 1925 and into the present day. The art gallery presents art exhibitions; its program may change.
The Union City Performing Arts Center is a 960-seat theater that opened in 2009. Another historic landmark is the former monastery church of Saint Michael's Monastery Church: its cornerstone was laid in 1869, and it was completed in 1875. Today it is called Hudson Presbyterian Church. The two dates give the site a specific historical time frame, while the theater and cultural center add further cultural highlights.
Celia Cruz Park was dedicated in 2004 in honor of entertainer Celia Cruz. Latin American stars are honored there with a star on Union City's Walk of Fame. The park thus commemorates Celia Cruz while also honoring other artists.
Parks, Reservoir and Skyline Views
Weehawken and Union City Reservoir Park includes a 14-acre reservoir on the Palisades. The reservoir offers a view of the New York City skyline. The park is well suited for morning jogging and walking. The water, views and opportunities for exercise are closely connected in this park.
Washington Park is shared by Union City and Jersey City. Its paths are shady and winding; 3.8 miles of trails are available for jogging or cycling. The two parks offer different highlights: those who want to focus on the reservoir and skyline views can consider Reservoir Park. For jogging or cycling along a route with a specified length, Washington Park offers another option.
