Hudson brings together waterfront trails, island history and urban discoveries. On the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, you can walk, run, cycle, enjoy the views and fish. The trail is 18.5 miles long. Its varied uses give you several ways to experience the waterfront according to your interests—from getting active to spending time with views of the water.

Trails and independent exploration

For independent exploration, Hudson County offers self-guided tours focused on history, culture and food, which you can follow on your smartphone. The Hudson Bike Loop is another way to experience Hudson County by bike. The Jersey City to Hoboken Waterfront Tour is another cycling option: it is 14 miles long and passes through Jersey City and Hoboken. When choosing a format, you can distinguish between themed smartphone-guided walks and a bike tour.

Ferry history and island visits

The first steam-powered ferry service began operating between Hoboken and Manhattan in 1811. Statue Cruises travels from Liberty State Park in Jersey City to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, and then returns. Check ferry services before your trip. Liberty State Park covers 1,212 acres, sits on the waterfront and offers sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

On Ellis Island, the museum documents the experiences of immigrants across three exhibition levels. The Ellis Island Hard Hat Tour offers another way to explore the island’s history: the guided tour lasts 90 minutes and goes through the hospital complex on the island’s south side. Availability may vary; check the schedule in advance if you plan to take the tour. The Statue of Liberty Museum displays the Statue of Liberty’s original torch.

City history, science and local products

In Jersey City, Hamilton Park is the heart of the Hamilton Park Historic District downtown. The 5.4-acre residential square is surrounded by tree-lined streets and rows of Victorian brownstone houses. In Hoboken, the terminal is also a historic landmark: it is the last surviving station on the New Jersey shore of the Hudson River still operating in its original function. Both places offer a tangible glimpse into the area’s history and cityscape.

The Liberty Science Center is home to 110 species of live animals and a large aquarium. It also has the largest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere. Alongside the historic sites, there are also attractions focused on science.

Agrotourism in Hudson County includes farmers’ markets with seasonal produce and locally made goods. This adds another way to discover the region alongside its trails, museums and historic sites. As dates for individual markets may change, check the latest information if you are planning a visit.
