Secaucus offers a range of options for a stay: a trail along the Hackensack River, wetlands with diverse bird habitats, activities on the water and local history. You can plan your visit around whether you would rather spend time outdoors, paddle, swim or learn about the area’s history. When choosing a hotel, the mix of nature, water and cultural activities you’re looking for may help you decide.
Greenway and River Trails
The Secaucus Greenway is 1.6 miles long. It begins at Millridge Road and ends at the Extended Stay Hotel on Meadowlands Parkway; to the south, it runs along the Hackensack River. Its length, starting point and endpoint give you concrete details to consider when planning it as a separate activity during your stay. Accessible parking is available at the Secaucus Greenway.
Another named river trail is the Hackensack Riverwalk, whose northern endpoint is Mill Creek Point Park. The park is also a starting point for NJSEA canoe trips, which explore Mill Creek Marsh. With both the trail endpoint and the canoe trip starting point, the park is a useful reference point for these two distinct water activities.
Mill Creek Marsh and Other Wetlands
Mill Creek Marsh is a 209-acre marshland. The former NJMC acquired the area from Harts Mountain Industries in 1996 for preservation. Today, the marsh provides habitat for breeding, wintering and migrating spoonbills, shorebirds and wading birds. These different habitat functions span several stages of the bird year and offer nature enthusiasts a different focus from the river trail.
Wetlands are also part of the Secaucus landscape in other locations. The Secaucus High School Wetlands Enhancement Site is located between Mill Creek Point Park and Secaucus High School. Between Laurel Hill Park and the bedrock of Laurel Hill, the county supports 14.89 acres of natural wetlands. These locations add further landscape contexts to the larger marsh area.
Paddling, Swimming and Local History
Mill Creek Marsh is used for paddling by recreational visitors. NJSEA canoe trips also explore the marsh and start at Mill Creek Point Park. This gives you two distinct water activities to consider when planning: paddling in the marsh and a canoe trip with a named starting point.
The Secaucus Swim Club has three swimming pools, a children’s pool, a diving board pool and a water slide. If you’d like to include swimming in your stay, check the club’s seasonal operating hours before your trip.
The Secaucus Town Museum presents the unique history of Secaucus and the influence of its people from the past to the present. Its broad historical scope adds a cultural option alongside the wetlands and water activities. Visitors who want to include local history in their stay will find a distinct topic here, in addition to outdoor activities.
