A large lake and a layered history offer two distinct ways to experience Red Willow: through its landscape and culture. The Red Willow Reservoir State Recreation Area encompasses 4,320 acres of land around a 1,628-acre lake. Other discoveries shift the focus from architecture and regional history to trails, parks and events. This lets you shape your visit to Red Willow around what interests you most.

History and Architecture

The Museum of the High Plains was founded on February 6, 1963, in the home of Mrs. John (Eleanor) T. Harris. Its mission was to preserve the history of Red Willow County and southwest Nebraska. Today, exhibits there feature the World War II air base and a German prisoner-of-war camp. A scavenger hunt leads visitors through the buildings and exhibits; you can get the current challenge at the reception desk.

The McCook Heritage Square Walking Tour spans more than ten city blocks and showcases a range of architectural styles, from the late 19th century through the early to mid-20th century. The Kelley Creek Walking Trail offers a different focus: it is 1.5 miles long, follows the creek and heads toward East H Street. The two routes differ in their emphasis: architectural styles and city blocks on the tour, and the creek and trail length on the trail.

In McCook stands the Harvey P. Sutton House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Red Willow County Courthouse was built in 1926–1927. Together with the tour, these buildings offer different insights into the area’s architectural history.

Trails and Public Spaces

Barnett Park is home to a decommissioned M60A1 battle tank donated by the Army National Guard for display. The park’s two sand pits are stocked with various fish species each year. Visitors aged 16 and older are required to have a fishing license. In Norris Park, the historic band shell serves as a focal point for festivals and celebrations.

Kiplinger Arena is part of the Red Willow County Fairgrounds. The arena has hosted equestrian, rodeo and agricultural events, team penning, roping and barrel racing, as well as RV, farm equipment and livestock shows.
