In the northeast of Nuckolls County, a river and a historic travel route tell different stories about the region. The Little Blue River crosses this corner of the county; the Oregon Trail also ran through the area, for about 16 miles. Today’s road leading east from Oak follows almost the original Oregon Trail route. Here, landscape and trail history offer two different perspectives on the same part of the county.

Oregon Trail History near Oak

Oak’s Oregon Trail Park is home to the state historical marker “Indian Captives” and a Pony Express monument to Little Blue Station. The historic station itself briefly served as a Pony Express station in 1861. Its site and The Narrows are northwest of Oak on private property and are not accessible to visitors. The Narrows near Oak is also associated with an event from 1864: there, Cheyenne attacked travelers and roadside ranches. The park monuments and the historic sites are therefore not the same; the two sites mentioned remain on private property and are not accessible.

Buildings, Collections, and Local History

Marquart Hall displays 3,000 model aircraft, with exhibits ranging from spacecraft to aircraft carriers. The area’s buildings also have varied histories: Henrietta (Ruskin) Presbyterian Church is the oldest church in Nuckolls County and was originally dedicated in 1889. The Log Cabin Post Office, built in 1872, was moved to the museum grounds. The Nuckolls County Historical Society Museum includes seven buildings rich in history; the grounds of the Nuckolls County Museum are also home to Ruskin Presbyterian Church.

At the WM Stansbury Building, sandstone faces depict local figures, well-known people from elsewhere, and three unidentified figures. The Nelson Cemetery Walkway and Viaduct offers a different perspective on local history: it is considered eligible for the National Register under Criterion A because it contributed significantly to pedestrian traffic patterns in Nelson and to the social engagement of the local P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Parks, Sports, and Annual Events

Harbine Park in Nelson combines lighted tennis courts, a fenced dog park, playground equipment, sand volleyball courts, and baseball fields. It also has a swimming pool, a track about 400 meters long, horseshoe pits, and public restrooms. Lincoln Park in Superior offers catch-and-release fishing, disc golf, horseshoes, and volleyball, along with playground equipment, picnic shelters, and exercise equipment. The different facilities showcase two sides of the local parks, from sports to outdoor recreation.

Sports and events also provide local highlights throughout the year. Elk Creek Country Club on the south edge of Nelson is a 9-hole golf course. Lawrence hosts the Cow Chip Open each year at its local golf course. The Nuckolls County Fair and Rodeo takes place annually in July in Nelson; Superior hosts a Victorian Festival every Memorial Day weekend in honor of Lady Evelene (Evelyn) Brodstone Vestey. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates for your travel year.

Rivers, Bird Migration, and Regional Planning

Nuckolls County lies in the Central Flyway, which offers a great diversity of birds during the annual migration. You can canoe on the Little Blue River and the Republican River. Check current launch sites and local equipment options before setting out. RV sites with electrical hookups are available in Superior, Nelson, Lawrence, and Oak; check whether each park is open before you arrive.

Food and a round of golf are also among the ways to explore the area: Superior Estates Winery has the Vignetta (Vineyard) Pizzeria. The Superior Country Club clubhouse offers a fully stocked bar and a menu. Alongside historic sites and parks, these make for appealing reasons to take a break or explore the region.
