350 acres of prairie hilltops, tree-lined creek bottoms, and rugged canyons make up the landscape of Rock Creek Station State Historical Park. Here, trail history comes to life in a specific place: Rock Creek Station was a stop for travelers on the Oregon Trail and California Trail. The landscape and travel history give Jefferson County a distinctive perspective for discovery.

Trail History at Rock Creek Station

Rock Creek Station was established in 1857 along the Oregon-California Trail. It served as a stagecoach and Pony Express station, as well as a stopover for travelers. On the grounds, you can explore reconstructed ranch cabins, a bunkhouse, a barn, a post office, and a toll bridge. The buildings illustrate the different functions of this historic stop, without limiting its history to a single structure.

Trail history is also present in the county’s landscape beyond the station: the Oregon Trail ran through Jefferson County, and wagon ruts left by the so-called “49’ers” can still be seen in some places. George Winslow’s grave is said to be the only one along the entire Oregon Trail marked with a stone in this way. These traces span different scales, from a single grave to a trail that crossed the county.

Explore the park grounds on six miles of hiking and nature trails. The grounds are open year-round from 8 a.m. until sunset. In summer, living history demonstrations featuring local reenactors are held regularly. Rock Creek Trail Days takes place every year on the first full weekend in June; the National Pony Express Re-Ride also takes place at the station each year in June. If you’re planning a trip to coincide with an event, check the specific dates in advance.

Trails, Water, and Natural Areas

Jefferson County’s natural areas range from individual hiking trails to larger designated areas. There are six Wildlife Management Areas covering more than 2,800 acres in total. Rock Glen Wildlife Management Area covers 706 acres at the southern end of Rock Creek Station State Historical Park. Flathead Wildlife Management Area covers 259 acres and offers a tree-lined hiking trail. In Fairbury, the Little Blue River Trail crosses the old Rock Island railroad bridge and passes through Flathead Wildlife Management Area. This lets you consider an individual route alongside a clearly identified natural area.

Those who want to focus on the water will find two lakes totaling 46 acres of water surface, as well as 55 acres of land, at Alexandria State Recreation Area. The area offers fishing, picnic shelters, and campsites. Leisure Lake in Jefferson County covers 25 acres. Rock Creek Station State Recreation Area also has a 40-acre campground beside the historic park. The figures for land and water areas give a concrete sense of the different sizes of these places; they do not indicate that they are part of a single site.

Culture and Places in Fairbury

In Fairbury, Jefferson County Courthouse combines a distinctive building material with a specific construction year: it was built in 1891 from hand-dressed limestone. Fairbury Commercial Historic District is a separate historic area, extending across approximately ten city blocks and comprising 117 properties.

Fairbury City Museum displays historic objects that illustrate early life and the challenges of pioneer life in Jefferson County. It is open year-round; special tours can be arranged by appointment. At Rock Island Railroad Museum, you can see Rock Island Railroad memorabilia and an HO-scale model train layout. The museum is located in one of two remaining Rock Island train stations in Nebraska. Fairbury thus offers different ways to explore history side by side: everyday objects, railroad memorabilia, and a historic courthouse.

Events also provide useful dates for your visit. Jefferson County Fair is held every year in July at Jefferson County Fairgrounds. From April through September, Jefferson County Speedway hosts mini sprint, truck, and three-quarter midget races on a banked oval dirt track. If you’d like to plan your trip around these dates, it’s worth checking the relevant event schedules.
