Cuming County offers several ways to combine cultural history with time outdoors during your stay. In Bancroft, you’ll find the John G. Neihardt State Historic Site; in Wisner, a trail system and several parks offer a range of visitor experiences. The county also has museums, golf south of Beemer and other recreational facilities. Visitor attractions extend across Bancroft, Beemer, Wisner and West Point. The four communities are each less than a 30-minute drive from one another, so you can choose where to go based on the interests that shape your stay.
Cultural history in different locations
The state dedicated the John G. Neihardt State Historic Site in Bancroft in 1976. The visitor center includes a museum, an exhibit area and a bookstore; the site also features the Sacred Hoop Prayer Garden and Neihardt’s historic writing cabin. Several aspects come together in one place: the exhibits, the garden and the writing cabin. For a cultural history focus in Bancroft, the site offers several specific topics rather than just a single exhibit.
The Wisner Heritage Museum was founded in 1996 to preserve Wisner’s community heritage. Reconstructions and collections cover local businesses, churches, crafts, schools and sports, as well as household and everyday items. The range of topics extends from community life to objects used in daily life. The Cuming County Historical Society Museum Complex adds further perspectives: it includes a depot, a Union Pacific caboose, a church, a one-room schoolhouse, a local history museum, and a building for tractors and historic machinery.
A horse barn dating to 1919, with a 50-foot-high hipped roof, is also part of the Museum Complex. The complex’s museums also show the development from horse-drawn equipment to gasoline-powered cars and tractors. This lets you explore technological change through different categories of vehicles and equipment, while the other buildings offer insights into a range of community institutions.
Trails, parks and golf
The Wisner Trails System connects Wisner Central Park with Wisner River Park and is about 1.83 miles long on foot. The route links two named parks for a walk. Wisner River Park has ball fields and a view of the Elkhorn River. The park is also associated with the Wisner Lions Club Rodeo and Livestock Show, as well as Thunder by the River Truck & Tractor Pull. If one of these events is the reason for your visit, check the dates as you plan.
The public Indian Trails Country Club offers another activity, 1.8 miles south of Beemer. The 18-hole golf course overlooks the Elkhorn River Valley. The facility includes a driving range and practice areas for short shots and putting. The club also offers a reception hall, tournament play and a bar. The county thus offers a range of interests: a designated walking route between parks, ball fields by the river and golf with dedicated practice areas.
Cuming County has eight parks. The facilities mentioned include Neligh Park, with an inclusive playground, and the Nielsen Aquatic Center. Dining options are available in Bancroft, Beemer, Wisner and West Point. For specific meals, check in advance which businesses suit your travel dates.
Plan your stay and choose where to go
The four communities are each less than a 30-minute drive from one another, which can help you plan your visits. Then compare the location of a specific place to stay with the places you actually want to visit. This keeps your choice of base aligned with your interests without combining the different destinations into a single activity.
