The Grand Gulf stretches for about three-quarters of a mile between rock walls that rise approximately 130 feet. At Grand Gulf State Park, you can view the landscape from trails above and from the bottom beneath the natural bridge; access to the bottom is not designated as an official trail. The bridge is 250 feet long, and its opening is 75 feet high.
Springs and River Landscapes
Greer Spring is Missouri’s second-largest spring. Its average daily discharge is approximately 210 million gallons per day. The spring branch flows for a little over a mile before joining the Eleven Point River.
The Eleven Point National Wild and Scenic River is 44 miles long. It is designated as a scenic river and is characterized by largely undeveloped banks and a largely undeveloped watershed. A 5.5-mile section from the confluence with Greer Spring Branch to Turner Mill Access is designated as a Blue Ribbon Trout Area.
The wetland area at Brushy Pond serves as spawning and breeding habitat for marbled salamanders and American bullfrogs.
River Access Points and Experiences on the Water
At Thomasville River Access in Oregon County, the State Highway 99 bridge serves as a put-in point for the Eleven Point National Scenic River. Public river access is also available at the Highway 19 river crossing near Greer and via gravel roads maintained by the U.S. Forest Service to Turner Mill North and Turner Mill South. Check river conditions and access before setting out.
At Cane Bluff River Access, you can float a scenic stretch with high rock bluffs in spring. The access is basic, and a restroom is available. Turner Mill South is also basic. At Turner Mill South, you’ll find limited, dispersed campsites, a limited day-use area, a single-lane concrete boat ramp and restroom facilities. Amenities may change depending on maintenance or site conditions; check before your visit.
Several access points and facilities offer views of the river landscape, ranging from a put-in at a road bridge to a small day-use area with a boat ramp. The places listed differ in their specific facilities, so you should not assume that they all offer the same amenities.
Hiking and Natural History
The Whites Creek Trail in the Irish Wilderness is a 17.5-mile loop. A Forest Service map dated March 15, 2022, shows three trailheads providing access to the route. Check current trail conditions and access before your hike.
At Boze Mill Float Camp, a turbine from the 1880s and a hand-laid stone wall from the Lucas-Boze grist mill have been preserved. Greer Mill is an outstanding example of a water-powered roller mill. Both sites connect the river landscape with traces of earlier milling technology, though they do not feature the same kind of historic remains.
Local History in Koshkonong
The Koshkonong Historical Museum is housed in a church building constructed in 1909 that later served as a Masonic lodge. Peach growing is also part of the town’s history: Koshkonong was a major peach-growing area in the 1890s.
