Trigg County offers a range of reasons to visit: Lake Barkley, nature and wildlife-watching areas, as well as history and events in Cadiz. Hiking, golf and other activities offer additional ways to explore the area.
Lake Barkley and the region’s natural areas
Lake Barkley extends through Caldwell, Livingston, Lyon and Trigg counties in Western Kentucky. At summer pool, the lake has 1,004 miles of shoreline and nearly 57,920 acres of water. Another large natural area is the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, which encompasses more than 170,000 acres of forest, wetlands and open land on a peninsula between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley in Western Kentucky and Tennessee.
The Elk & Bison Prairie preserves a native grassland habitat within a 700-acre enclosure. Elk and bison roam freely there. Other protected wildlife includes turkeys, various birds, small game, butterflies and prairie mammals; great egrets and various songbirds are frequently spotted. Visitors drive through the area on a 3.5-mile paved loop in enclosed vehicles. Since access and safety guidance may change, check the latest information before your visit.
The Long Creek Trail runs between Honker Lake and Hematite Lake: a 0.25-mile paved path on level ground with good opportunities for wildlife watching. Check current accessibility information before your visit. Also located between the two lakes is the Woodlands Nature Station, the gateway to the 8,500-acre Nature Watch Area. Guided eagle outings are offered there in January and February. Other programs include guided canoe trips, afternoon hikes and the Cool Critters Day event; availability is seasonal and should be checked before your trip.
The Golden Pond Visitor Center is the information center for the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. It offers maps, brochures, trailheads, restrooms, a gift shop and a planetarium. The Golden Pond Planetarium & Observatory presents educational programs on a domed screen 40 feet in diameter. Check current visitor information and program times in advance.
