Ten stops provide a clear structure for the Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument’s self-guided audio driving tour. A GPS map and audio files help with navigation; app details may change. The history experience here is therefore designed as a drive with audio, not a city walk.
History among parks, walking trails and murals
Zollicoffer Park in Nancy is dedicated to the Civil War history of Pulaski County. Another way to explore is on foot through downtown Somerset: a self-guided interpretive walking tour presents part of the county’s 200-year history. The two experiences differ in setting and how you get around—from an audio driving tour to a walk through town.
In downtown Somerset, the Somerset’s Mural Trail invites you to discover a diverse selection of murals. Rather than exploring history through stops or explanations, the focus here is on public art. Historical themes and visual impressions thus emerge as different aspects of a visit.
The Master Musicians Festival also has a clear place in the calendar: it takes place every year on the third weekend in July. If you’d like to make the festival the focus of your trip, check the specific dates and program ahead of time, as both may change.
Trails, water views and disc golf
Several recreational options are located close together in Pulaski County Park: the park has a beach overlooking Fishing Creek, a tributary of Lake Cumberland. Its trail network also includes a total of 16.5 miles for hiking and mountain biking. This distance refers to the combined trail network; conditions on individual trails may vary.
Disc golf courses also vary in size. Pulaski County Park and Eubank City Park each have an 18-hole course, while Rocky Hollow Recreation Area has a 9-hole course. The number of holes is a specific difference between these options. The golf course at General Burnside Island State Park offers a different setting: it is surrounded by Lake Cumberland.
Small discoveries with their own focus
The Children’s Botanical Garden of South Central Kentucky encourages children to connect plants with science, history, literature and art using all their senses. At Firebrook Community Park, a walking path follows a Readers to Leaders book trail. Both places combine nature with a theme that helps visitors engage, but have different focuses: learning across several fields in one, and the connection between a path and a book trail in the other.
Cave Hill Vineyards has cultivated 1,400 grapevines since 2005.
Lake Cumberland and water sports
Lake Cumberland is home to species including crappie, largemouth bass, sunfish, catfish, sauger, walleye, striped bass and white bass. This list gives an overview of the lake’s fish diversity. Catches and regulations may change if you’re planning a fishing trip.
For water sports enthusiasts, Waitsboro Recreation Area has a boat ramp. Wake Cumberland Watersports offers water sports lessons; check the latest program details when planning. Alongside historical and urban discoveries, there are also ways to enjoy the water and a range of recreational activities, with varying levels of activity and different access requirements.
