On the Green River, where the river meets the historic Rochester Dam, lies John Prine Memorial Park. It was dedicated in 2022. The 18 Chinkapin oaks commemorate Prine’s music: each tree represents one of his studio albums. The riverside setting and musical remembrance come together here. A boat ramp provides access to the Green River, where fishing and kayaking are possible; check the ramp’s condition before setting out.

Trails with Different Route Types

At Lake Malone State Park, you can choose between two moderate trails with different route types. The Blue Heron Trail is 1.5 miles long and is a loop and connector trail; parking is available at the campground. The Laurel Trail is also 1.5 miles long and moderate, but follows a linear route; parking is available at both entrances. The trails have the same length and difficulty rating, but differ in route type and parking locations. If you’re weighing the options, this comparison offers practical guidance.

The Muhlenberg County Rail-Trail offers a different landscape. The six-mile paved trail passes through former coal towns, rural hamlets, scenic wetlands, and deciduous forests. Runners, cyclists, dog walkers, and horseback riders use it. Near the trailhead in Central City is an antique railroad car used as a railroad museum. Along the route, you can take in both the region’s landscapes and its railroad history.

Brizendine Brothers Nature Park is a 12-acre forest park with a trail that runs approximately half a mile through the woods. Luzerne Lake City Park includes a 52-acre lake and a two-mile walking path around its shore. The trail lengths offer two different scales: approximately half a mile through the woods compared with two miles along the lakeshore.

Music, Architecture and Memorial Sites

Life-size bronze statues of Don and Phil Everly and John Prine stand in downtown Central City. The Everly Brothers Homecoming concerts began in 1988 and became a tradition that drew thousands of fans downtown. The Muhlenberg Music Museum is located in the Central City Tourism Commission office.

In Greenville, the Muhlenberg County Courthouse, built in 1907, stands at the center of the courthouse square. Its architectural features make it one of Kentucky’s outstanding courthouses. A view of the courthouse square complements the area’s musical history with a notable example of county architecture.

Felix E. Martin Jr. Hall is a 24,000-square-foot performing arts center with 782 seats on the West Campus of Muhlenberg County High School. It hosts large-scale touring productions, concerts, lectures, and assemblies. Its event lineup encompasses a variety of performances and public gatherings.

Another memorial site is the Veterans Memorial at Lu-Ray Park & Amphitheater. In Greenville, House of Onyx showcases unique designer jewelry in its showrooms. Its offerings include colored gemstones, gemstone jewelry, minerals, fossils, and Mexican onyx. In Muhlenberg, alongside musical history and architecture, you can also encounter jewelry design and geological specimens.
