At Meade State Park, shortgrass prairie meets a fishing lake; in the town of Meade, a museum traces the county’s history from the time of Indigenous peoples to the present day. These two ways of exploring shape trip planning differently: outdoor landscapes and activities sit alongside collections and historical connections. When searching for a vacation rental, you can consider which of these themes you’d like to focus on more.

Prairie, Fishing, and Trails

Meade State Park encompasses 803 acres of shortgrass prairie and recreational facilities around the 80-acre Meade State Fishing Lake. The lake is home to sunfish, catfish, and largemouth bass, and offers good fishing opportunities. The area sizes highlight the contrast between the larger prairie and the smaller lake. The park is on K-23, eight miles south and five miles west of the town of Meade.

The nature trail offers opportunities for birdwatching, biking, and hiking. The Stumpy Arroyo Loop is 0.5 miles long, rated easy, and designated for hiking and biking. Depending on your interests, you can focus on birdwatching along the nature trail or consider the loop as a specific trail option. Check current trail access before your visit: temporary fire-related trail closures were reported on May 21, 2026.

Hunting and fish rearing are also among the nature-related activities in Meade County. The 360-acre Meade Wildlife Area offers opportunities to hunt doves and quail. The Meade Fish Rearing Station is the only fish-rearing facility in southwest Kansas. Tours of the Meade Fish Hatchery are available by appointment; arrange a time before your visit.

History in Town and Across the Landscape

The Meade County Historical Society Museum presents the county’s history from the time of Indigenous peoples to the present day. Its focus areas include the first settlers and agriculture. A special collection includes 62 saddles from around the world, gathered by four generations of the Bartlett family. This brings together a broad historical perspective and a highly specialized collection. The museum is on Highway 54 in downtown Meade. K-23, Highway 160, and Highway 54 also meet in town.

The landscape also has historical connections. Francisco Coronado first crossed Meade County in 1541. Meade State Park was established in 1927 on land belonging to the Turkey Track Ranch. The two dates relate to different stories: the crossing of the county and the later establishment of the state park.

The Dalton Gang Hideout was once the home of Eva Dalton Whipple, the sister of the Dalton Gang. The Hideout’s grounds include the Wild West setting of “Old Town,” built for historical reenactments and mock gunfight competitions. While the museum brings together county history and artifacts, these sites lead to a specific person and a purpose-built setting.

When searching for a vacation rental in Meade County, this distinction can help with planning: would you like to focus on nature and fishing, or on museums and historical sites? Interests in prairie, trails, fishing, and history offer different starting points for your stay.
