Grant County is mostly flat, offering expansive views that stretch for many miles. The county’s High Plains are also home to deer, pheasants, wild turkeys, coyotes, rabbits, and skunks; opossums are occasional visitors. The wide-open views and wildlife show two distinct sides of this landscape: the open horizon and a diverse habitat.

Traces of the Santa Fe Trail

In Grant County, Klein’s Ruts preserves an approximately 440-meter-long section of the Santa Fe Trail with four distinctive parallel ruts. The length and ruts make the remains tangible in two ways: through their approximate extent and as a striking feature of the terrain. Lower Cimarron Spring was a stop on the Desert Route of the Santa Fe Trail. The historical perspective thus ranges from a preserved trace in the landscape to the function of a stop along a specific route.

High Plains History at the Adobe Museum

The Historic Adobe Museum is a building constructed from adobe blocks in the 1930s and listed on the Kansas State Register of Historic Places. It depicts the history of life on the High Plains through scenes, three-dimensional murals, and sets. The scenes and sets convey the history spatially, while the three-dimensional murals offer another form of presentation. The building and the exhibit offer two perspectives: the adobe-block structure itself and the life on the High Plains that the displays focus on.

Trail Networks and Park Amenities

At Frazier Park in Ulysses, Frazier Lake is the main attraction. The park has about four miles of hiking and biking trails. Nearly one mile of the trail network is paved with concrete or asphalt and leads to more challenging singletrack sections. Two figures are useful for planning: about four miles for the entire trail network and nearly one mile for its paved portion, which leads to more challenging singletrack sections. This makes it possible to consider the total length, surface, and technical difficulty separately. Frazier Park Lake was restored as a water-based recreational amenity for the Ulysses community.

Barb Dye Park offers specific amenities for picnicking, play, and sports: a large climbing structure, a picnic shelter with nine tables, shaded picnic areas, an additional swing set, and a basketball court. The nine tables are in the shelter; there are also additional shaded picnic areas.

Regional Products and Getting Around

The annual Grant County Home Products Dinner showcases regional products. At its 62nd edition in 2025, about 1,200 people were served at the Civic Center. Dates and menus may vary. If you’re planning your trip around the dinner, check the dates and menu for that year’s event.

Ulysses Airport is one mile north of Ulysses on Highway 25. If you’re including it in specific travel plans, check the latest operational information, as details may change.
