Below the confluence of Flat Rock Creek and the Neosho River, the Neosho Wildlife Area lies on a broad, flat floodplain. It is a distinctive natural highlight for your explorations of Neosho County. Nearby, a mission founded in 1847, historic school and church buildings, museums and gardens tell the story of the region from many different angles. You can shape your visit around your interests, whether that means exploring river landscapes and enjoying recreation on the water, or delving into history, art and local traditions.

River Landscapes and Recreation on the Water

Neosho State Fishing Lake is a 92-acre reservoir managed primarily for recreational fishing. It offers opportunities for fishing, camping and wildlife watching. The Neosho Wildlife Area, in turn, offers occasional fishing opportunities on the Neosho River, Flat Rock Creek and Brogan Creek; some stretches of these waterways lie within the wildlife area. Together, they offer two distinct ways to enjoy nature: recreational activities at the lake and occasional fishing in three named waterways.

If you’re visiting to fish, be aware that seasonal rules may apply. The different offerings can help you choose the focus of your outing: at the State Fishing Lake, camping and wildlife watching are among the listed activities, along with fishing; in the Wildlife Area, the focus is on occasional fishing in the rivers and creeks.

Mission, Frontier History and Historic Buildings

Founded in 1847, the Osage Catholic Mission quickly developed into an important frontier settlement in southeastern Kansas and a gateway for trade and exploration of the frontier. The Osage Mission-Neosho County Museum is located on the grounds of the original mission and directly at the site of St. Ann’s Academy. The mission’s early history and the museum’s current name are closely connected here.

Architecture and school history also offer tangible points of interest. The Austin Bridge in Chanute is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1877, Oak Grove School is a single-story sandstone schoolhouse and a typical example of an early one-room schoolhouse in rural Neosho County. In Erie, First Christian Church is a fine example of the Classical Revival style; it was later converted from a church into a residence. Together, the three buildings represent different aspects of regional history: bridge construction, rural education and architecture.

Museums, Art and Gardens

The Martin + Osa Johnson Safari Museum offers self-guided tours and staff-led tours year-round. Johnson films are also shown daily in a 30-seat theater. If a particular tour or film screening is important to your plans, check the latest information before your visit.

The Chanute Art Gallery has a permanent core collection featuring works across 25 media by 135 artists. Summit Hill Gardens brings together art, nature and the preservation of historic values; the site is also home to the first school in Neosho County. Local residents and travelers alike can visit St. Francis Parish Gardens for personal prayer and meditation. In Erie, the Mem-Erie Historical Society and Museum preserves the city’s history and cultural heritage and shares them with the public.

A local culinary specialty is the handmade fudge at Cardinal Drug Store, made the traditional way and served with soda. If you’re interested in this pairing of a sweet treat and a drink, it offers a distinctly everyday point of interest alongside the museums and historic sites.

Seasonal Events and Local Traditions

The Farmers Market at the south entrance to Santa Fe Park runs seasonally from April through October, on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m. The Old Soldiers and Sailors Reunion in Erie is an annual, six-day tradition dating back to 1873. If you’re planning your trip around the market or the reunion, check the latest times and dates in advance.

Neosho County offers a wide range of experiences: a broad floodplain and recreation on the water, reminders of mission and frontier history, as well as art, gardens and a long-standing tradition in Erie. You can choose which of these will shape your visit according to your own interests.
