Indiana Dunes National Park stretches for 15 miles along the southern shore of Lake Michigan and includes areas in Porter County. More than 1,100 native plant species make botanical diversity another defining feature of the park. In Porter, these nature experiences meet historic sites, gardens and stages, offering a variety of ways to pursue your interests.

Dunes, Shoreline and Trails

Indiana Dunes State Park is also located on Lake Michigan: it covers 2,182 acres and has more than three miles of beach. The 2,182 acres refer to the area of the park; its beach along Lake Michigan stretches for more than three miles. In Indiana Dunes National Park, the Calumet and Porter Brickyard bike trails are also named as cycling routes; no further route details are associated with them.

Those who prefer to explore the landscape on trails will find several different examples. Coffee Creek Preserve covers 157 acres of wetlands, forests and prairies. More than five miles of trails and boardwalks lead through these habitats. Coffee Creek runs through the preserve for approximately 2.5 miles. Another river landscape awaits on the Heron Rookery Trail, which follows a section of the Little Calumet River. The 3.3-mile hiking trail has a stated walking time of about two hours.

Dunes Prairie Nature Preserve is at the southwest corner of Indiana Dunes State Park, west of the access road. There is parking and trail access; Trail 3 runs through the preserve. Check trail conditions before driving there.

Seasons and Activities

Dunewood Campground in Indiana Dunes National Park offers overnight camping from April 1 through October 31. This clearly limits the season for a stay. Porter Beach has seasonal restrooms and drinking water. Those looking for a winter activity will find cross-country ski trails at Indiana Dunes State Park; ski rentals are not available there.

The scenery also changes at Sunset Hill Farm County Park: nearly seven miles of trails wind through woods, prairie and fields. Chickens, ducks, rabbits, goats and sheep are on display during regular park hours. Admission is free year-round. The trails through varied landscapes and the chance to visit the animals offer different ways to spend time outdoors.

Explore History

Bailly Homestead is a preserved example of a trading post and early pioneer homestead. Its architecture combines logs and brick—a distinctive building feature that offers a glimpse into the history of the place. Dunn's Bridge County Park adds another historic feature: its restored bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park also offers public access to the Kankakee River for fishing and paddling.

The Railway Garden at Gabis Arboretum showcases the history of technology. On two acres, G-scale miniature trains illustrate the history of American railroads. The model trains run Friday through Sunday from May to October, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you plan to visit during this seasonal operating period, it is helpful to check the published times before your visit.

Culture, Markets and Local Traditions

PoCo Muse focuses on the history and culture of Porter County and is the oldest institution dedicated to this subject. Memorial Opera House offers a stronger focus on performances: its year-round program includes Broadway musicals, youth theater, concerts and special events. The Indiana Dunes Arts + Culture Trail adds a playful, self-guided tour of 14 arts and cultural organizations in Porter County.

Chesterton's European Market is a regular arts and crafts and farmers market held on Saturdays from May to October. Its offerings include artisan cheeses, meats and produce, as well as coffee, pastries, bread and prepared street food. The Porter County Fair, meanwhile, has been a summer tradition for more than 175 years. The market and the fair show two different sides of the local events calendar: a recurring market held over several months and a long-standing summer tradition.

More Landscapes

The prairie at Gabis Arboretum covers approximately 40 acres. Hawk Ridge County Park combines native hardwood forests, wooded wetlands and former agricultural land. At Moraine Nature Preserve, the landscape is shaped by gentle ridges, steep hills, water-filled depressions, a shallow pond and a mature beech-maple forest. These descriptions encompass a range of habitats, from open spaces to wooded and wet areas.

Other landscaped garden areas offer different highlights: the Japanese garden at Ogden Botanical Garden features bridges, a koi pond, a tea house and a fountain. Along with the trails and natural areas, these places offer specific points of interest for a variety of interests—from landscapes and plants to local history, performing arts and markets.
