If you’d like to experience architectural history beyond simply looking at façades, you can explore original buildings at Swiss Heritage Village on a guided tour. Qualified guides lead visitors through the relocated buildings on the grounds; the Village covers 26 acres. Every fall, it hosts a Heritage Festival featuring live demonstrations, interactive exhibits, historical reenactments, and games and activities for children. Individual program items may vary. Check the current festival dates and program before making plans.
Buildings, Literature and Local History
Limberlost Cabin in Geneva was completed in 1895 and has 14 rooms. Its completion date places the building at the end of the 19th century; the number of rooms gives a concrete sense of its size. Limberlost Swamp, in turn, inspired Gene Stratton-Porter’s articles, prose works, and photographs. The area thus brings into view both a particular historic building and a landscape with a literary and photographic legacy.
Geneva’s historic architecture also offers a variety of points of interest. The Geneva Downtown Historic District preserves the character of a commercial center from the late 19th century. The Geneva Downtown Commercial Historic District comprises 22 contributing buildings. The architectural styles represented there include Italianate, Romanesque Revival, Second Empire, and Commercial Italianate Vernacular. The style names make the documented architecture’s diversity tangible, while the Historic District’s description focuses attention on its former role as a commercial center.
Another link to the past leads to Decatur: the Charles Dugan Mansion was originally built in 1902. The Adams County Historical Society acquired the former mansion at auction in February 1968. The building at 420 W. Monroe St. was intended to serve as the Society’s residence and as a museum.
Experience Nature and Trails at Your Own Pace
At Limberlost Conservation Area, self-guided hikes are available in the nature preserves from sunrise to sunset. This makes for a different kind of exploration than the guided tours at Swiss Heritage Village: here, you set your own pace within the stated access hours. Scheduled tours of Limberlost Cabin and the Visitor Center take place Wednesday through Sunday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Check the times before your visit.
Kekionga Park has canoe launches as well as extensive paved trails for hiking and biking. These are specific ways to enjoy the park in different ways, without implying any particular route. St. Marys Nature Preserve adds about three-quarters of a mile to the Rivergreenway trail network. Hanna Nuttman Park in the Decatur area is the last surviving remnant of the original forest.
Because trail routes, access, and facility conditions can change, check the latest information about nature areas and parks before visiting. If you’re interested in climbing, the Adams County Service Complex has a climbing facility. Contact the Fitness Center for current hours and prices.
Distinctive Landmarks and Things to Do
Muensterberg Plaza and Clock Tower in Berne is home to the only Swiss cantonal tree in the United States. The Peace Monument is the world’s first monument dedicated exclusively to peace. Such distinctive details add another layer to the story told by buildings and landscapes: they speak to special symbols and the history associated with places.
There are specific options for sports enthusiasts, too. Shackley Street Park has three baseball fields. At Affolder Park, a shelter and an open pavilion can be rented for events; confirm availability before your visit. This makes it easy to tailor your choices in Adams County to your interests—from historic buildings and literature to hiking trails and parks.
