Sandstone, Forest, and Prairie

Rising more than 100 feet above the Wabash River, Black Rock is an outcrop of Mansfield sandstone. Designated a state nature preserve, Black Rock protects rare sandstone and siltstone barrens. Two perspectives come together here: the rock formation above the river and the protection of the rare barrens.

The Fall Creek Trail is a 0.8-mile loop with a waterfall and a gorge-like sandstone canyon. Its clearly defined route and two distinct natural features make it a distinctive hiking option.

Crow’s Grove features a rare and striking stand of old-growth pine forest. Williams Woods protects forested areas and restored prairie along Possum Run in western Warren County, near the historic transition zone between prairie and oak woodlands. The Laura Hare Forest Prairie Border Trail at Williams Woods is a footpath; posts along the trail display examples of poems by Grover and Millie Williams.

River and Waterfall

In Warren County, a 10.5-mile stretch of Big Pine Creek meets the criteria for designation as a state scenic river. It runs from Rocky Ford near Rainsville downstream to County Road 131. The route is defined by these endpoints; canoeing and kayaking, however, depend on the seasonal condition of high spring water. When spring water levels are high, Big Pine Creek offers whitewater conditions for both activities.

Williamsport Falls is a 90-foot waterfall at 25 N Monroe St. in Williamsport, Indiana. A wide, gently sloping path leads to the creek bed. Water flow can vary by season, so the waterfall looks different throughout the year.

Local History and Archives

Warren County is one of eight counties in Indiana’s Wabash Valley tourism region. The Warren County, Indiana, Historical Records Database lets you search and view thousands of historical articles, photos, and media clips related to the county. In Williamsport, the “Williamsport Warren County historical marker” stands on the lawn in front of the Warren County Courthouse.

Hotel Mudlavia near the small community of Kramer is also part of the county’s history: built in 1890, it once attracted guests from around the world. The natural springs near the hotel were once believed to have healing properties. The historical perspective thus extends from searchable county records and a marker in Williamsport to the hotel’s past and the springs near Kramer.
