117 lakes and river channels of the Elkhart River shape the landscape of Noble County. Water is more than just a landscape feature here: more than 30 public access points on lakes and waterways make activities such as kayaking and canoeing, fishing, and swimming possible. Depending on your interests, you can experience the area’s connection to water from the shore or on the water.

Lakes, Trails, and Wildlife

At Chain O’ Lakes State Park, nine interconnected lakes form the heart of the activities on offer. Canoes, pedal boats, kayaks, and rowboats are available to rent. This brings together a connected lake landscape and a range of ways to get out on the water. Rental details may change seasonally; check them before making plans.

The hiking trails also offer a variety of experiences. Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center has eight miles of trails, offering opportunities to explore different ecosystems. At Black Pine Animal Sanctuary, paved trails run for more than half a mile through habitats for wolves, foxes, tigers, bobcats, and bears. G. Martin Kenney Memorial Park in Ligonier has a lighted, one-mile walking path. The routes differ both in length and in what you can discover along the way: ecosystems, animal habitats, or a park trail.

Black Pine Animal Sanctuary also offers 90-minute guided tours. They explore the stories and species of rescued animals, as well as how an animal sanctuary operates. Accessible tours are available for visitors who have difficulty walking across the 18-acre grounds. Tour times and booking arrangements may change seasonally; check them before your visit.

Another way to explore nature is the Gene Stratton-Porter Carriage House Visitor Center. Topics there include moths, wildflowers, woodpeckers, and carnivorous plants. Noble County is also home to three communities designated as Bird Town: Albion, Kendallville, and Rome City. This recognition honors their efforts to protect birds and their natural habitats.

Discover History and Culture

In Ligonier, the Heritage Station Museum tells the city’s eventful history through a variety of artifacts. These include an original Mier carriage, built in Ligonier and now restored. In the historic downtown, more than three dozen larger-than-life murals add another dimension: their subjects explore the city’s past.

Founded in 1992, the Mid-America Windmill Museum displays 52 windmills. The Noble County Courthouse is an architectural landmark, built from brick and limestone between 1887 and 1889 in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. The two sites offer different ways to explore history: windmills on the one hand, and a courthouse with distinctive architecture and specific building materials on the other.

The cabin designed by Gene Stratton-Porter also connects architectural history with the landscape: completed in 1914, it sits on the shore of Sylvan Lake. Visitors interested in agriculture can ask local producers about customized tours and experiences. Offerings range from grapes to heirloom tomato varieties; advance contact is required.
