Mounds State Park includes ten prehistoric earthworks built by the Adena-Hopewell. The Great Mound was probably built around 160 BC.
For orientation: the park is east of Anderson, near I-69. The Nature Center at Mounds State Park includes a wildlife viewing room, animal exhibits and interactive games. So, along with the earthworks, you’ll also encounter topics related to wildlife.
Art and History in Anderson
Anderson University has three gallery spaces: the Jessie C. Wilson Gallery, the Warner Sallman Collection and the Jeeninga Museum of Near Eastern and Biblical Archaeology. The Warner Sallman Collection permanently features original paintings by Warner Sallman. This means that one of the gallery spaces focuses on the work of a single artist, while the names of the other two spaces signal additional art and archaeology topics.
The Anderson Museum of Art offers groups guided tours of the facility by prior arrangement. Tours can focus on its history, collection, exhibitions or architecture. The Splatter Box offers a different experience there: an immersive painting experience under black light.
The history of Chesterfield also offers different perspectives. The Chesterfield Spiritualist Camp District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Camp Chesterfield offered women opportunities to lead and speak in public at a time when they were not yet allowed to vote. The Andersontown Powwow takes place every year in Madison County; check the dates and venue for the year in question.
Parks, Trails and More Experiences
Falls Park has 3½ miles of trails for walking, running and cycling. At Shadyside Memorial Park, walking trails run around Shadyside Lake; a red covered bridge is also part of the park landscape. Rangeline Nature Preserve has three cycling loops named “Novice,” “Intermediate” and “Expert.” While the trails at Falls Park can be used for three different activities, the loops at Rangeline Nature Preserve are specifically designated as cycling options.
Harrah’s Hoosier Park offers casino games, harness racing, dining and entertainment. Live harness racing takes place from March through December. If you’d like to include races in your plans, check the current racing calendar first. This makes the seasonal period a useful guide without suggesting specific dates.
