Ripley tells its story in a variety of places: at hand-built stone arch bridges, in small museums, and in landscapes that invite exploration. Some of the bridges in Ripley County are still in use; they were built in the late 1870s and 1880s. The Busching Covered Bridge near the entrance to Versailles State Park is an example of a different design. It dates to 1885.

Bridges and Historic Traces

In Versailles, the story of bridges leads to other layers of history. Tyson United Methodist Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. A 2010 memorial statue in Versailles State Park commemorates the Civilian Conservation Corps. The Civil War and the Corps are also part of the park’s history.

A more personal connection to the past can be found behind the Ripley County Historical Society Museum: the Smith-Engel log cabin, built around 1830, stands there. The construction date is deliberately approximate; the cabin connects a museum visit with a specific historic building.

Museums and Local Memories

In Milan, the Milan ’54 Hoosiers Museum explores a story that became known far beyond basketball. It opened in 2013 in the former State Bank of Milan building on West Carr Street. The collection preserves artifacts and memorabilia related to Milan’s 1954 basketball team, whose story inspired the film “Hoosiers.”

Osgood and Sunman also preserve their respective local histories. The Osgood Museum opened in 2006 to preserve, interpret, and exhibit the history of Osgood, Indiana. The Sunman Historical Museum displays, among other things, Sunman’s original 1856 town plan, a 1930s jail, and artifacts from early pioneer families. Five self-guided driving tours in Ripley County connect the history of the Underground Railroad with other historic sites. They give your exploration a thematic direction, without every stop telling the same story.

Outdoor Encounters and Excursions

In Friendship, the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association holds two major shooting events every year at Walter Cline Range: the Spring National Shoot in mid-June and the National Championship Shoot in mid-September. Spectators are welcome; check event dates before your trip. Curly Gostomski Primitive Range features campfires, tipis, and demonstrations of historic pioneer ways of life. Vendors offer traditional crafts and equipment, especially during the National Shoots.

Nature offers further contrasts. Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge covers 50,000 acres across three counties: Jefferson, Jennings, and Ripley. Beech Tree Trail is 0.89 miles long, has a mulch surface, and leads to an observation platform. Check the trail’s current condition before your visit. Fishing is permitted at Old Timbers Lake; seasonal access rules may apply. An active eagle’s nest can be observed there during the summer months, but sightings are not guaranteed.

The Osgood Trails also run around the Town of Osgood. If you plan to explore these trails, confirm the current route beforehand. This makes it possible to explore Ripley’s different sides with a purpose: from buildings and local histories to trails and wildlife viewing.
