Toccoa Falls is a 186-foot waterfall on the wooded campus of Toccoa Falls College. Access to Toccoa Falls is through the Gate Cottage Gift Shop. Visitor arrangements may change; check the latest guidelines before your arrival.
Waterfall, Mountain and History
Currahee Mountain offers a different perspective on the landscape: it is the highest peak in Stephens County, and part of it lies within Chattahoochee National Forest. The waterfall and the peak offer distinct highlights—one is a striking waterfall on a wooded campus, while the other is a mountain that is also part of the National Forest landscape.
At Tugaloo Bend Park, natural scenery meets a long history of use. The park covers 87 acres. The Indigenous town of “Estatoe” stood on its grounds in the 18th century; later, a farm operated there in the 19th and 20th centuries. Visitors who want to explore the area from the water can rent canoes and kayaks at Tugaloo Bend by the day for trips on the Tugaloo River, Lake Hartwell or Yonah Lake. Availability and terms may change, so it is recommended that you check or reserve before your trip.
Historic Sites and Their Stories
Traveler's Rest was built around 1815 by James R. Wyly as an inn on a stagecoach route and as a plantation house. In 1964, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Visitors can tour Traveler's Rest and see original artifacts and furnishings. Tour availability may vary; check the latest visitor arrangements before your trip.
The Currahee Military Museum also tells history through tangible mementos. It is located at the site of the old railroad depot in Toccoa and houses photographs, documents and memorabilia from World War II. The museum includes a barn where members of the PID were housed before and after D-Day. The collection brings together different forms of remembrance: written documents, images and objects, as well as a place connected with lodging.
The history of Camp Toccoa goes back further: it was built in the 1930s under the Works Projects Administration (WPA) and served the National Guard. During World War II, around 17,000 soldiers trained there. Today, Camp Toccoa at Currahee is open to visitors Fridays from 12 to 3 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 3 p.m.; group tours are available by request. Opening hours may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
Stages, Music and Events
The Ritz Theatre at the Schaefer Center hosts theater, music and film events. The Ritz Theatre is also designated a National Register Historic Landmark. The Toccoa Symphony gives concerts annually at various venues in Stephens County. The concerts are therefore held at multiple locations around the county, rather than at a single specified venue.
The season also shapes the events calendar. Hosted by the City of Toccoa, the Currahee Arts Festival takes place each spring. On summer Saturday evenings, the Ida Cox Music Series brings a variety of musical styles to the stage in Toccoa. The Festival of Trees takes place in December and supports local nonprofit organizations. These events offer different seasonal planning points; check the latest event information for specific dates.
The Toccoa Stephens Community Theater offers live theater experiences for Stephens County and the surrounding counties. For travel into the city of Toccoa, the Amtrak Crescent train stops daily at the restored station. Train schedules may change; check current service before traveling. Culture, history and practical orientation can thus be considered different aspects of a visit, without combining them into a single program.
