Toccoa Falls is 186 feet high and is one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls east of the Mississippi. It is located on the campus of Toccoa Falls College; a short, 100-yard accessible path leads to it. For planning outdoor activities, comparing it with longer trails offers a useful point of reference: a short route to the waterfall contrasts with a much longer hiking trail.
Waterfalls and Trails with Different Profiles
The Col. Robert F. Sink Trail is an approximately 5-mile out-and-back trail. On Currahee Mountain, the trail gets steeper as it climbs, and the hike becomes increasingly strenuous. Its length and difficulty clearly distinguish it from the short accessible path at Toccoa Falls. Another waterfall can be found in public Henderson Falls Park: Henderson Falls is located there.
The Tugaloo Corridor: Nature, Environmental Education and History
The Tugaloo Corridor is a center for interpretive environmental education and the sharing of American heritage. It includes the prehistoric Estatoe Indian Village; the Toccoa Canoe Tour is also offered in the Corridor. Miles of hiking, walking, and biking trails are available for outdoor activities. The offerings there thus include both trails on land and a named canoe tour.
Two events are held regularly in the Tugaloo Corridor, and their timing differs for trip planning: the Tugaloo Bend River History Tour is held regularly in May, while the Tugaloo Bend Nature Walk is held regularly in October. If either event is the reason for your trip, check the specific dates in advance.
Theater, Museums and Events
The Ritz Theatre at the Schaefer Center is listed as a National Register Historic Landmark and hosts theater, music, and film events. At the Stephens County History Museum, visitors can explore local history in Toccoa’s historic 1915 train depot. The Currahee Military Museum offers extensive information about the regiments trained at Camp Toccoa during World War II.
Currahee Military Weekend is for veterans, their families, and anyone interested in Camp Toccoa and World War II history. The program includes reenactments of military scenes in a recreated military camp, as well as a parade through the historic downtown district. For trip planning around the weekend, check the specific event dates.
The Ida Cox Music Series offers free concerts every Saturday in downtown Toccoa. Each week features a different music genre. Check the current schedule before your trip if you would like to include the concert series in your plans.
Golf and Getting There
The Links at Lake Toccoa is a public nine-hole golf course and offers access to Lake Toccoa. The course also has a connection to Camp Toccoa @ Currahee: its clubhouse is the camp’s former Officer's Club.
The Amtrak Crescent stops in Toccoa twice daily. Since train schedules can change, check the current schedule before your trip. This makes it possible to coordinate your arrival with a set event date or other planned experiences.
