An ancient stone wall, 855 feet long, lies at the mountain’s highest point and gave Fort Mountain State Park its name. It is a tangible starting point for exploring Murray County’s history and landscape. Chief Vann House represents another chapter: Cherokee heritage. There are also trails, natural areas, and seasonal offerings to suit different interests.

Cherokee Heritage and Historic Sites

Chief Vann House is Georgia’s best-preserved historic Cherokee home. Tours are offered at the house; check the current schedule before your visit. The stops on the Chieftain Trail in Murray County include Chief Vann House and Fort Mountain State Park. The named trail therefore covers both a historic house and the park with the stone wall that gave it its name.

God’s Acre is a burial ground for people believed to have been Moravian missionaries. Chief James Vann invited them to the area in 1801. The cautious wording is part of the site’s history: the identity of those buried there remains uncertain.

Trails in Fort Mountain State Park

At Fort Mountain State Park, you can compare two trails with distinctly different lengths. The shorter Lake Loop is 1.2 miles long and open to bicycles and pedestrians. The longer Gahuti Trail is an 8.7-mile loop. Four remote campsites can be used with a permit. The offerings therefore differ not only in trail length but also in the specified types of use.

Before setting out, check the condition of the Gahuti Trail and the permit requirements. Access points and conditions for the Lake Loop may change, so also check this information before your visit. This will help you plan your trail choice and any potential use of the campsites in advance.

Natural Areas and Getting Around

The Coosawattee Wildlife Management Area covers 2,043 acres in Murray County. McEntire Road VPA includes fields open to hunting migratory birds. Its wooded terrain may be used for small-game hunting on announced hunting days. Seasonal hunting is subject to published dates and regulations.

From Calhoun, take the access route via Highway 225 NE to Highway 136. Then head east on Highway 136 (Nicklesville Road). After five miles, turn north onto Davis Road. When you enter Murray County, Davis Road becomes McEntire Road; the kiosk is 0.7 miles farther on the right. Check current road conditions and signage before you drive.

Seasonal Experiences

The Black Bear Festival takes place every October on the grounds of the Recreation Department on Green Road. Check the current dates and venue for the particular year’s event before your trip.

Abundance Farms offers classes on making soap, jam, and jelly. Ask in advance about current dates and available spaces. Prewitt Berry Farm offers seasonal pick-your-own blackberries and blueberries. Check current opening dates before making plans. This lets you plan your trip around seasonal offerings without assuming they will be available.
