Rivers and Wildlife Areas

Rivers and wildlife areas give Jeff Davis County a strong focus on nature. At Towns Bluff, paddlers can access the Ocmulgee River, Oconee River and Altamaha River, with a boat landing available. The Bullard Creek Wildlife Management Area offers wildlife viewing, hunting and fishing on the Altamaha River; it is also home to the Bullard Creek Archery Range. Towns Bluff therefore represents paddling on several rivers, while Bullard Creek combines nature viewing and other activities in a large wildlife management area.

The Bullard Creek Wildlife Management Area covers 17,016 acres of diverse habitats, including pine forests and river wetlands. The state-owned Flat Tub Wildlife Management Area covers 7,141 acres: about 5,641 acres of upland pine and hardwood forest, plus 1,500 acres of hardwood depressions and river floodplains. Flat Tub thus combines upland and forest with depressions and floodplains, while Bullard Creek is characterized by pine forests and river wetlands. The total areas also differ significantly: Bullard Creek, at 17,016 acres, is larger than Flat Tub, at 7,141 acres.

Getting Around and Planning

The boat ramps in the Flat Tub Wildlife Management Area are at the end of Flat Tub Landing Road and Rocky Hammock Landing Road. Geocaching has a specific time restriction: during turkey season, it is not allowed there before 10 a.m. If geocaching is one of your interests, take this restriction into account when planning.

Architecture and Events

The Big House adds a historic touch: it is an Edwardian-era house built in 1914 by the Sweat family of Douglas. Its construction date and architectural period bring a different dimension to travel planning than river access and wildlife areas.

Events also offer a variety of experiences. The Snipesville Community holds a New Year's celebration every January 1, with a parade and a traditional lunch menu. Jeff Davis County's annual County Fair takes place every October at the county fairgrounds. The Three Rivers Arts Festival is held where three rivers meet and offers workshops on painting, poetry, photography and other topics. Food vendors are also featured; workshop offerings and vendor participation may vary from year to year. The Altamaha Fishing Tournament takes place at Towns Bluff Park and includes bass and panfish divisions. The South Georgia Food & Wine Festival grew out of three smaller food truck events in Hazlehurst.

The calendars offer different planning dates: the New Year's celebration takes place every January 1, and the County Fair is in October, while workshops and food vendors at the Arts Festival may vary from year to year. If you are traveling for a particular event, check the date and current program in advance.
