New Echota brings together political history and the development of written language in Gordon County: From 1825 to 1835, it was the capital of the Cherokee Nation and is considered the birthplace of the written Cherokee language and the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper. At the New Echota State Historic Site, visitors can see twelve original and reconstructed buildings. History and architectural landmarks come together here, offering a compelling introduction to an important chapter of Cherokee history.

Experience History at Historic Sites

Other places in the county also tell stories from different periods of the past. Resaca Battlefield Historic Site is associated with the first major battle of the Atlanta Campaign and has a six-mile trail network. Fort Wayne Civil War Historic Site offers another perspective: Its two well-preserved fortifications were used by Confederate and Union troops during and after the Civil War.

Resaca Confederate Cemetery commemorates those who fell in the Battle of Resaca. It was the first Confederate cemetery in the country to be dedicated and is the final resting place of 451 soldiers who died in the battle. Together, the Resaca sites show how a single historical context can be explored through a battlefield site and a cemetery.

Culture, Music, and Local History

The Harris Arts Center houses the Roland Hayes Museum, the Ratner Theater, art galleries, and The Art Market Gift Shop. The museum features photos, stories, and audio recordings, as well as signed programs, personal letters, and musical scores from Hayes’s career. Roland Hayes was the son of formerly enslaved people and became the first African American singer to achieve international recognition. The collection brings together personal documents and music with the story of an artist whose career had significance beyond the region.

The Harris Arts Center offers rotating exhibitions, classes, and cultural performances. Calhoun is also home to the restored GEM Theatre, with 461 seats. Oakleigh is a carefully restored antebellum mansion and houses the Gordon County Historical Society. Tours are available by appointment; check whether an appointment is possible before setting out.

Rivers, Gardens, and Outdoor Activities

Gordon County has 47 miles of rivers that offer opportunities for paddling on calm waters. The ROCK Garden offers a very different scale: More than 50 miniature buildings made from stones, shells, pebbles, and other materials are spread across a one-acre site with flowers and green spaces. A nature trail leads through the woods; along the way, you may spot native wildlife. The garden’s detailed structures stand alongside a trail through a natural setting.

Cycling and golf are also among the possible activities. The cycling routes in Gordon County range from easy to moderate. Fields Ferry Golf Club is a public 18-hole golf course.

Markets, Festivals, and Group Activities

Copper Creek Farm holds a sunflower festival every summer. The Farmers’ Market in Downtown Calhoun offers food from local vendors, fresh produce, handmade goods, and seasonal items. Market days and seasonal details can change; check the current dates if you’re planning your visit around the market. At Payne Farm & Produce, the farmers’ market features locally grown and pick-your-own fruits and vegetables. Seasonal offerings may vary there, too.

The Northwest Georgia Fair is held every year at Cherokee Capital Fairgrounds; dates and programming may change. For groups, the Sunrise Planetarium offers visits that combine exploring astronomy with a ride on a narrow-gauge railway. Advance scheduling is required. The Calhoun-Gordon County Public Library adds to the cultural offerings with regional history exhibits and educational programs. If a particular program is important to your visit, check the current schedule.
