The challenging George Disney Trail climbs Rocky Face Mountain and ends at the grave of Confederate volunteer George Disney. From May 8 to 10, 1864, the same mountain was the site of the first battle of the Atlanta Campaign. Here, a specific hiking destination meets a precisely dated chapter in Whitfield’s history.

Mountain and Lakeside Trails

Haig Mill Lake Park has more than five miles of wooded trails around the lake. Two floating fishing piers and a launch point for kayaks and canoes add to the waterfront amenities. Visitors can enjoy trails through wooded surroundings as well as opportunities to fish or paddle on the lake.

The Mount Rachel Hiking and Biking Trail is designed for hiking and cycling. It is listed as 1.6 miles long, with an elevation gain of 245 feet. Shaded areas, seating, and restrooms are also available. The trails offer different experiences: at Haig Mill Lake, the routes around the lake take center stage, while Mount Rachel’s trail length and elevation gain are specified.

Historical Traces in the County

Whitfield County was where the Union Army began its Atlanta Campaign. The county also has the nation’s largest collection of intact Civil War fortifications. These historical connections extend beyond Rocky Face Mountain and give the county a particular focus on the history of the campaign.

Prater’s Mill also combines history with outdoor activities. In 1855, pioneer entrepreneur John Pitner built a gristmill, a sawmill, and the miller’s house there. At Prater’s Mill Historic Site, visitors can fish, picnic, and walk the nature trail. The site is also a starting point for the Cohutta-Chattahoochee Scenic Byway. Tours are available by appointment only; arrange a time before you arrive.

Textile Culture and Art

The Bandy Heritage Center for Northwest Georgia collects, preserves, and interprets the material and cultural history of the many communities in Northwest Georgia. Its collections include more than 100,000 objects. The “Threads of Home” exhibit explores the history and heritage of the region’s chenille bedspread industry. Digital resources, such as driving guides and online exhibits, complement the Center’s themes.

The Bandy Heritage Museum at the Dalton Visitor Center explores Dalton’s textile heritage. In 1963, the Creative Arts Guild was founded in Dalton, making it Georgia’s oldest community arts organization. It hosts free exhibition openings every month on First Friday. Check current dates before you arrive. The Creative Arts Guild’s annual ARTS FEST is also part of its program: it features a juried gallery exhibition and an outdoor arts and crafts market; program details may vary. The Robert T Webb Sculpture Garden displays works by local and regional artists and is free to visit.

The Dalton Freight Depot was built in 1911 as a Southern Railway freight station. Today, the restored building houses the Dalton Visitor Center and a gift shop. Check the opening hours before you arrive. From the Visitor Center, you can also watch the Dalton Diamond, where CSX and Norfolk Southern tracks cross at a 45-degree angle.
