In Barrow County, cultural attractions and railroad history in Winder, recreational opportunities in parks, and a seasonal farmers market come together. Winder is in North Georgia, in Barrow County between Athens and Atlanta. Knowing which of these interests matters most to you can help you plan your trip and find a hotel. For individual events and seasonal offerings, it is worth keeping an eye on the relevant dates.

Culture and History in Winder

The Winder Cultural Arts Center is home to the Colleen O. Williams Theatre. The center presents programs and exhibitions in the visual arts, music, theater and dance. The Winder-Barrow Community Theatre also focuses on theater arts, offering performance opportunities, workshops and educational programs. The cultural scene therefore spans a range of art forms as well as opportunities to engage with theater.

Railroad history can be explored at several locations. The Winder Railroad Depot at 6 Porter Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A small railroad museum downtown displays a caboose from the SCL/L&N Georgia Clinchfield West Point Route and Gainesville Midland Railroad steam locomotive No. 208, a 2-10-0 Decapod. The Barrow County Museum is housed in the former county jail, built in 1914. Its exhibits cover topics including Senator Richard B. Russell, county history and Fort Yargo.

Rockwell Universalist Church also offers a historical connection: It was founded in 1839 and is the second-oldest Universalist church in Georgia. The current building dates from 1881. These dates give the church a place in a longer regional history, while the depot, railroad museum and county museum each highlight other aspects of the past.

Parks, Trails and Recreation

Fort Yargo State Park near Winder offers several recreational trails. The park includes a two-story log blockhouse built in 1792 for protection against the Muscogee and Cherokee. Also located there is the Will-A-Way Recreation Area, which opened in 1971 and was the first comprehensive outdoor recreation facility in the United States designed for people with disabilities. The park thus combines trails and recreation with an important part of Barrow County history.

Winder Legacy Park brings together opportunities for play and outdoor recreation. Its amenities include an inclusive playground, open green space, a walking path, pavilions and the 28-foot-high rope-climbing pyramid structure Barrowsaurus. The park is free to visit and open daily from sunrise to sunset. At White's Mill Park, a 2.3-mile unpaved nature trail runs along Cedar Creek. These places offer different experiences, from a designated play area to a longer nature trail.

Barrow County’s parks and recreation system includes lighted tennis courts, pickleball courts, sports fields, playgrounds, pavilions, a dog park and an outdoor loop trail. Barrow County Parks and Recreation also rents out fields and facilities for public tournaments. For sports-focused travel plans, Chimneys Golf Course is another option: It has 18 holes, plays to par 72 over 6,384 yards and offers five sets of tees.

Market Days and Events

The Barrow County Farmers Market brings together more than two dozen local farms, food producers and artisans. Offerings include fresh produce, pasture-raised eggs, jams, baked goods and handmade products. The market also features seasonal events and activities for children. In 2026, it will be held Saturdays from April 4 through November 21, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, at 15 Porter Street in Winder. For trips after the 2026 season, please check the market dates then in effect.

Jug Tavern Park is used each year for Winder’s Spooktacular Halloween Festival and Santa's After Party. For art activities scheduled throughout the year, The Heirloom Sisters in historic downtown Winder offers hands-on experiences for adults and children, including guided painting classes, art parties, classes and retreats. Dates depend on the event calendar.
