The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area river corridor also includes Forsyth County. Within the recreation area, relatively undisturbed forests, wetlands, cliffs, gorges and open water are part of the landscape. Forsyth also offers specific places and trails that let you experience water, activity and history in different ways.

By the River and Lake

Chattahoochee Pointe in Forsyth County is a public boat launch on the river. Mary Alice Park is on Lake Lanier in Forsyth County. On the shore of Lake Sidney Lanier, the park has a sandy beach where you can swim, as well as three paved ramps. This gives you two different places to enjoy the water: a boat launch on the river and a lakeside area with a swimming beach and ramps.

Trails, Scenery and Views

The Big Creek Greenway runs for more than 11 miles through open green spaces, natural areas and forests, with views of a creek. The trail is 12 feet wide and built with concrete and boardwalks. You can walk, jog, bike and inline skate there.

Sawnee Mountain Preserve covers 963 acres. At the top of its trail system is Indian Seats, a natural rock formation with views of the North Georgia mountains. Interpretive signs along the trail provide information about the area's natural and cultural history. The Greenway combines a long trail with changing scenery; the Preserve centers on a distinctive rock formation and mountain views.

Architecture and Local History

In 10-acre Poole's Mill Park, a covered bridge spans the shallows of Settendown Creek. The bridge was built in 1901. Some of Cumming's earliest leaders are buried in the municipal Cumming Historic Cemetery. The focus on local history shifts from a dated structure to the people who led Cumming in its early days.

Art, Everyday Life and Visiting Hours

Cumming City Center offers public art, local restaurants, shopping, trails for walking and biking, and parking areas. The center also includes the Lou Sobh Amphitheater and Reflection Pond. Its public outdoor spaces, including pocket parks and trails, are open seven days a week: 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. from March through October, and 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from November through February.

Regional Location and Finding Accommodation

Forsyth County lies between the Atlanta metropolitan area and the mountains of northeast Georgia. The region is accessible via Georgia 400 and Interstates I-85, I-285 and I-75.
