Gila Bend brings together local history and discoveries in the surrounding desert landscape. In town, a museum, visible sections of historic roads, and memorial sites take center stage; farther afield, petroglyphs and trails through desert areas await. This distinction can help with trip planning: first consider whether you want to focus on cultural history or outdoor activities.

Local History Between Museum and Road

The Gila Bend Museum houses more than 2,000 artifacts relating to the history and culture of Gila Bend and the surrounding region. Its themes range from the Great Bend of the Gila River and the Papago, now known as the Tohono O’odham, to mining and ranching communities and modern life in Gila Bend. The local history presented therefore encompasses different communities and periods.

Historic traces have also been preserved outside the museum: sections of the 1879 Wagon Road are still visible in Gila Bend. Parts of the unpaved road that ran from Yuma to Phoenix in the 1920s have also survived. These two reminders of earlier routes belong to different eras, and each tells a distinct part of the region’s transportation history.

The Gatlin Site is located in Gila Bend and is designated a National Historic Landmark. The Gila Bend Site is described as a “Museum and Cultural Site” and offers historic and interpretive exhibits, parking for cars, and a restroom. Check the facility’s operating details before your trip.

Memorial Sites and Anza Traces

The 9/11 Memorial Park contains a 4,000-pound fragment of a steel beam from the September 11, 2001 attacks. The city holds a memorial service there every year on September 11. The site thus brings together a tangible memorial and a recurring occasion for remembrance.

From Gila Bend, visitors can visit five areas of former Juan Bautista de Anza campsites; two are in Gila Bend. Nearby are Camp #27 San Simón y Judas de Uparsoytac and Camp #28 by the Village of Opas. The expedition rested at an Indigenous settlement on November 10 and 11, 1775. The designation of these places as former campsites preserves their historical character.

Petroglyphs and Desert Trails

The Painted Rock Petroglyph Site lies farther afield in the region surrounding Gila Bend. Hundreds of figures and patterns carved into rocks by Indigenous peoples centuries ago can be seen there. A short interpretive trail with information panels leads around the petroglyph site. Hiking, birdwatching, and stargazing are also among the activities available there. The combination of rock art and information panels offers a different focus from the historic sites within the town.

The North Maricopa Mountains Wilderness Area lies about 12 miles east of Gila Bend. Activities listed there include hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, camping, wildlife viewing, and photography. The Brittlebush Trail is a six-mile one-way trail through the Sonoran Desert landscape; check trail conditions before your trip.

A 12-mile section of the Anza Recreation Trail can be reached from Gila Bend via Highway 238 and is suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Separately, State Route 238 between Maricopa and Gila Bend provides access to the north-central part of the Sonoran Desert National Monument. A nine-mile route also runs through the heart of the monument. If you plan to take this route, check conditions on the primitive roads and trails before setting out.

The options described vary by location, trail profile, and activity: at Painted Rock, petroglyphs, an interpretive trail, and nature observation come together; other options include longer distances or activities such as mountain biking and horseback riding. This lets you choose the themes of your stay without combining cultural sites and trails farther afield into a single excursion itinerary.
