In Wickenburg, traces of Western history meet hiking trails and other outdoor activities. The historic depot and the Jail Tree offer insights into the town’s past; museums and a theater add to its cultural offerings. When planning your visit, you can focus on your interests: history and art, a hike, or the area’s varied landscapes and outdoor activities.

Western History in Wickenburg

Wickenburg’s historic depot still stands today and serves as the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce building. Another historic site is the Wickenburg Jail Tree: the 200-year-old mesquite tree served as the town jail from 1863 to 1890. This gives the tree two specific historical markers—the period when it was used long ago and its history since then.

Two later honors also recognize the Jail Tree. In 2012, it was officially designated an Arizona Centennial Witness Tree. In 2016, the mesquite tree was selected as one of Arizona’s seven “Magnificent 7” Heritage Trees. Those interested in Wickenburg’s history will find not only a historical story here, but also a named natural landmark with two distinct honors.

Museums, Theater, and Events

The Sigler Western Museum houses a renowned collection of Western art and history. Its exhibits include life-size dioramas depicting scenes from Wickenburg in 1912. This date sets the historical context for the displays; the collection brings art and history together with a specific picture of the town at that time.

Each spring, the museum opens its annual exhibition, “Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the West.” It showcases work by more than 50 women artists of the West. If you would like to plan your visit around this exhibition, check the current dates before you travel.

Another cultural venue is the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts, a modern theater with 600 seats. In the historic downtown, Stone Park offers visitors a place to linger. Arts and crafts markets and other community events are often held there. If a market or event is important to your plans, it’s worth checking the relevant dates.

Hiking Trails and Outdoor Activities

Wickenburg’s hiking trails range from options for beginners to those for experienced hikers. One specific hike leads to the summit of Vulture Peak. The mountain lies south of town; a hiking guide provides information about parking and trails. Since trail conditions can vary, it’s a good idea to check them before setting out.

Wickenburg’s trail systems and paths are suitable not only for hiking but also for biking, horseback riding, and use by off-highway vehicles (OHVs). Outdoor options therefore vary according to the activity you prefer: in addition to hiking trails, there are options for cyclists, riders, and OHV users. The descriptions of beginner and advanced trails refer specifically to hiking.

River Landscapes and Birdlife

The trails at Hassayampa River Preserve are self-guided. They pass through river lowlands, the floodplain, cottonwood and willow forests, and dense mesquite stands. These landscape features give these trails a different focus from the hike to the summit of Vulture Peak.

The Preserve’s riparian corridor provides habitat for 280 bird species. They live or breed there, or occur there during migration. Nature-minded visitors can take in both the varied landscapes along the trails and the corridor’s importance as a habitat.

Another Excursion in the Surrounding Region

Hassayampa River Canyon Wilderness Area is in the broader surrounding region, about eight miles northeast of Wickenburg. Activities there include longer horseback rides, backpacking trips, sightseeing excursions, and photography. Its location differs from that of Vulture Peak, south of town; the activities mentioned also offer a different focus. The direction and approximate distance can help guide your choice, without conflating the different offerings into a single route.
