Stella Maris lies on the eastern Atlantic shore of Long Island. Pink sand flats face the wild waters of the Atlantic, and natural rock pools lie along the coast. When choosing accommodation, it helps to consider the focus of your stay: are you most interested in the coast, plantation history or water activities? When choosing a place to stay, you can distinguish these local themes from destinations across Long Island as a whole.

Atlantic Coast and Love Beaches

Love Beaches is a small Atlantic beach just below Stella Maris Resort. Offshore rocks offer some protection, and natural rock pools can occasionally be found there. The coast thus offers both the wild waters of the Atlantic and a local stretch of beach with some protection. The pools are an occasional feature of this beach, while natural rock pools can also be found along the Stella Maris coast.

Plantation Ruins and Cave

The ruins of Adderleys Plantation are the remains of a cotton plantation. In 1790, Mr. Abraham Adderley was granted 700 acres of land that once encompassed all of Stella Maris. The plantation’s history is therefore linked to a specific land grant and the extent of the estate at the time. Stella Maris Cave is on the grounds of Stella Maris Resort Club. It contains stalagmites, stalactites and numerous bats. The ruins and the cave offer different points of interest: the history of a cotton plantation on the one hand, and cave formations and wildlife on the other.

Water Activities in the Area

Stella Maris Water Sports offers dives at Shark Reef. Snorkelling in marine gardens is among the island activities offered at Stella Maris Resort Club. A visit to see the manatees is also one of the visitor activities at Stella Maris Marina; check whether the visit is available before you travel. Reef diving, snorkelling in marine gardens and visiting the manatees are different focuses for activities on the water. Long Island also offers a walking tour of Adderley’s Plantation. Check whether the tour is available before you travel.

Long Island in a Broader Context

The coastlines also vary across Long Island as a whole. The east coast has dramatic cliffs and caves facing the Atlantic. On the sheltered west side, calm sandy beaches slope gently into the Bahama Bank and offer good swimming conditions. Another beach on Long Island is Cape Santa Maria Beach, with four miles of white sand. Activities there include diving, swimming and snorkelling in turquoise waters, as well as walking along the beach’s four miles.

Long Island offers other distinct themes for culture and history. The Long Island Museum presents the island’s history, culture and traditions. Exhibits include straw work, shells, a history mural, Rake n. Scrape instruments and Junkanoo costumes. Beneath the settlement of Hamilton’s on Long Island lies the largest cave system in The Bahamas. Hamilton’s Cave once served as a refuge for the Lucayans. Archaeological discoveries from 1936 show that the Indigenous people of The Bahamas lived there around 500 AD.
