Andelfingen is known as a mill village: the MĂĽhlibach stream once powered six mills. The historic village centre, trails along the canal system and activities on the Thur offer different focal points. You can plan your stay according to your interests in local history, nature exploration or water activities.

Mill Village and Historic Buildings

The Mill Village Trail follows the watercourse of the intact canal system through the historic village centre. Other features of the area’s architectural history include the Haldenmühle, a mixed-construction building with visible timber framing dating from 1800 and a brick extension added in 1843, as well as Andelfingen Castle, built between 1780 and 1782. Historic timber-framed houses typical of the region also shape the village’s appearance. The Thur Bridge at Kleinandelfingen connects Kleinandelfingen with Andelfingen.

Traces of earlier settlements also offer insight into the area’s history. Remains of walls beneath the present-day church point to a settlement in the 8th century. In the Late Middle Ages, Andelfingen’s church was important to the region and served several outlying communities. Archaeological finds associated with Andelfingen include Neolithic stone axes and Bronze Age pottery; a settlement dating to the 12th century BC has also been identified at Bollen.

If you would prefer to explore the historic village centre with a guide, you could consider a private guided tour of the mill village. The tour takes you through the village centre. Check whether it is available before your trip.

Trails, Nature and Castle Park

The Thur Trail is a hiking trail between Andelfingen, the Altener Bridge and Kleinandelfingen. Its 13 information panels cover historic and modern flood-control structures along the Thur, the Thur landscape, and distinctive plants and animals. The nature app offers a different perspective: it introduces 13 biodiversity hotspots in Andelfingen and Kleinandelfingen and guides you on a bicycle or on foot to explore different habitats. The Thur Trail therefore focuses on the river and landscape, while the app focuses on habitats and their hotspots.

Andelfingen Castle Park is a destination in its own right: it is open to the public during the day all year round. You can plan your visit around a trail with information panels, an exploration of different habitats or a visit to the park, without combining these into a single route.

The Thur, Canoe Trips and Outdoor Swimming Pool

The Thur Kanu canoe route runs for 18 kilometres from Andelfingen to Eglisau. Its starting point is at Andelfingen outdoor swimming pool, right in front of the pedestrian bridge. At normal water levels, the described route is considered easy to paddle; take the water level and weather into account. The distance and endpoint give the trip a clearly defined scope, while conditions on the water remain important for planning.

Andelfingen swimming pool also has some specific features: the pool is 50 metres long and has five lanes. The diving facilities include heights of 1, 2 and 3 metres. The outdoor pool is open to visitors from elsewhere as well as local residents. Seasonal operating details may vary, so please check the latest information before your visit. The bistro serves food and ice cream, even without admission to the pool.

Andelfingen’s attractions range from local history and architecture to walking and discovery trails, paddling and swimming. If you are focusing on culture, the village centre offers specific historical points of interest; for exploring nature, the Thur Trail and nature app cover different topics. The canoe trip and outdoor pool add water-based activities to these options.
