Langwiesen offers several distinct perspectives for a stay in Laufen-Uhwiesen: the history of the URh shipyard, the Hilari tradition and routes along the Rhine. Depending on your travel dates, you can focus on a shipyard tour, Hilari in January or time by the water.

Shipyard history and village character

The name «Lange wisa» was first recorded in a document referring to Langwiesen in August 876. The Reformed Church of Feuerthalen and Langwiesen was first mentioned in 1390. Despite sharing a political municipality with Feuerthalen, Langwiesen has retained its distinct village character to this day.

In 1870, the Langwiesen shipyard moved into its new shipyard building in Langwiesen. Various important ships belonging to the «URh» were built there; since 1965, the shipyard has been responsible for maintaining the shipping company's vessels. Construction and ongoing maintenance illustrate different aspects of the shipyard's history.

The URh shipyard offers a bookable tour lasting about 1.5 hours. It covers the historical background of the URh shipping company and shipyard, and includes all the buildings, including the slipway hall. Check available dates before your trip.

Hilari: a living tradition in January

Langwiesen celebrates Hilari together with Feuerthalen, Flurlingen and Uhwiesen every year during the week of 13 January. The tradition dates back more than 600 years; 20 young people from Langwiesen founded their own Hilari association. Musicians accompany the joint celebrations throughout the Hilari season. Customs in Langwiesen include Samichlaus figures visiting the village's young people and the burning of a Böögg. If you plan to visit for Hilari, check the specific event dates during this recurring week.

River swimming area, Rheinwiese and walking routes

The public Langwiesen river swimming area is right on the Rhine, near Schaffhausen. It has a beach volleyball court and shaded spots under trees. The Rheinwiese recreation area is another place to enjoy a swim: the Rheinwiese lido opened before the Second World War; a campsite was added later. From 2016 to 2018, the site underwent a major redesign and was expanded into a recreation area.

The recreation area includes a sunbathing and play lawn, various play attractions and a paddling pool for young children. Bathers also have access to a kiosk and a public barbecue area. The campsite caters to both long-term guests and spontaneous visitors. The Rheinwiese recreation area can be reached via the main road between Feuerthalen and Langwiesen. From the «Langwiesen» or «Feuerthalen» stops, it is a ten-minute walk to the site.

For walks and hikes, two routes lead to different destinations: the left-bank Rhine riverside path runs from Langwiesen to Tössegg. The «From Paradise to the Wine Country» hiking trail leads directly to the Rhine in Langwiesen. To reach Altparadies, go under the main road and across the railway line to the edge of the forest. The Rhine Falls are also in the area around Feuerthalen; from Feuerthalen, they can be reached on foot, by bicycle and by public transport.
