Vallorbe lies on the Orbe in a valley between the ridges of Dent de Vaulion and Mont d’Or; to the south, the valley is closed off by Mont d’Orzeires. Nature and industrial history offer two distinct focal points for a stay: the caves and the Orbe Gorge sit alongside places that bring ironworking and railway history to life. You can tailor your plans to whether you want to focus on underground landscapes, historical technology or outdoor trails.

Ironworking and railway history

The Musée du fer et du chemin de fer tells the story of ironworking in Vallorbe and traditional local crafts. Audiovisual presentations and collections are complemented by six waterwheels that power machinery, and a working forge. Industrial history in Vallorbe dates back to the 16th century, when the town had three ironworks employing dozens of blacksmiths. In 2023, blacksmithing was added to the cantonal inventory of intangible cultural heritage of the Canton of Vaud.

The railway is also part of the museum visit: visitors can operate historic trains on a gauge 0 layout with 277 metres of track. A multimedia presentation tells the story of the Simplon railway in French, German and English. If you plan to enjoy these interactive or audiovisual offerings, check the visitor information in advance.

Fort 39-45 Vallorbe offers a different historical perspective. The military museum recreates soldiers’ lives during the 1939–1945 mobilisation, with weapons, equipment from the period and 80 mannequins. Vallorbe thus presents different facets of history side by side: industrial work and the railway on the one hand, and soldiers’ everyday lives during the mobilisation period on the other.

Caves and trails along the Orbe

The Grottes de Vallorbe were formed by an underground river. The formations described there include cascades and lakes, as well as stalactites, stalagmites, draperies and columns. From the arrival car park, a 350-metre footpath leads to the cave entrance; the walk takes around five to ten minutes. Admission to the Musée des Minéraux «Trésor des Fées» is included in the cave entrance fee. As ticket inclusions can change, check this information before your visit. Groups can also book a special aperitif featuring a tasting of products matured there, including wine and Valgrotte cheese; be sure to confirm the booking details in advance.

The Grotte aux fées offers a separate alternative: a prehistoric cave about a 20-minute walk from the Grottes de Vallorbe. The access path is steep, and the cave is not lit. These conditions make it quite different from the described route to the caves and should be taken into account when planning your visit.

The trails also offer a range of experiences. The Sentier des planètes illustrates distances in the solar system: a human step of about 60 centimetres represents 2,755,000 kilometres. The footpath to the trail is near the start of the Piste Vita. The Sentier didactique du Grand Morcel begins behind the Frézillon site, near the Patinoire des 3 Vallons. Its route follows the Orbe uphill, with several information posts about local fauna and flora.

For a longer hike, a 17-kilometre route starts in Vallorbe and follows the Orbe Gorge to Orbe; the walk takes about 4.5 hours. The gorge has been a protected nature reserve since 1970. If you are lucky, you may spot kingfishers, grey herons, chamois and beavers near the river. Check trail conditions and seasonal access before setting out. A separate circular route leads through the forests of Vallorbe to Fort de Pré-Giroud, a historic site in Switzerland’s defences during the Second World War.

More activities and getting there

For wildlife viewing, Juraparc is home to bison, brown bears and wolves in large areas designed to reflect their natural way of life. Guided educational visits cover the animals, their environment and their way of life; check whether you need to book. At the mini-farm, visitors can see and touch a range of farm animals.

On the banks of the Orbe, a heated outdoor swimming pool has a water temperature of 25°C, a large slide, a paddling pool and a snack bar. For ice skating, the covered Patinoire des 3 Vallons is a seasonal option, open to the public from mid-September to the end of March. Check the schedule for public skating sessions before travelling. Fishing is possible along the Orbe in Vallorbe and in the northern part of the fishable Étang du Grand Morcel. Check permits and local restrictions in advance.

Vallorbe is a hub for cross-border rail lines and road connections. Train services run to Paris Gare de Lyon, to Milan via Lausanne and to Le Brassus; a bus network connects the town with Orbe, Yverdon-les-Bains and Pontarlier. These connections are a practical consideration if you are thinking of staying overnight in Vallorbe.
