Champvent can be explored through two distinct interests: the history of its church and Château, and the mountain biking options offered by the Vélo Club. Saint-Christophe, with its own historical connections, and regional Côtes de l’Orbe produce and wines add to the picture. You can therefore tailor your stay to architecture and history, landscapes or outdoor activities.
Notre-Dame Church: several phases of construction
Notre-Dame de Champvent Church was first mentioned in 1013. In 1821, it was completely restored by the Bernese architect Samuel Jenner. Another significant change followed in 1891, when architect Francis Isoz added a bell-tower porch topped with a spire. The bell tower has four bells. These dates, separated by long intervals, show that the church’s history encompasses not just one phase of construction but also later alterations.
In Switzerland, Notre-Dame is one of the rare examples of innovative religious Baroque architecture influenced by Protestantism. Visitors interested in churches and architectural history will find both this distinctive architectural classification and specific names and dates: Jenner was responsible for the 1821 restoration, and Isoz for the bell-tower porch added in 1891. The first mention in 1013 provides an earlier historical reference in this sequence.
The Château de Champvent in its historical context
The Château de Champvent was built around 1295–1300 in the form of a Savoyard square. After the Battle of Grandson, Bernese troops set the château on fire. Restoration work began in 1479 and was completed in 1481. The château’s history thus juxtaposes its form and construction around 1300 with a later period of destruction and restoration.
The Château is listed in the Swiss Federal Inventory of Monuments, Ensembles and Archaeological Sites of National Importance. The 2026 route guide also features it as a point of interest on the Tour des Châteaux.
Saint-Christophe and its historical traces
The hamlet of Saint-Christophe lies on a hill overlooking the Orbe Plain and the village of Mathod to the east. The Château de Saint-Christophe is also located here. In its large first-floor hall, the painted decoration is in the Bernese style and was recently uncovered. Saint-Christophe thus adds another building and a specific artistic feature to the history of Champvent’s château.
Archaeological findings also contribute to the character of the area: they confirm the presence of a cemetery in Saint-Christophe and suggest that a church may have stood nearby. The church remains a probable interpretation, while the cemetery is confirmed as having existed. Alongside the architecture, this offers visitors interested in cultural history another perspective on the hamlet’s historical traces.
Mountain biking options and practical information
The Vélo Club Champvent offers two mountain biking routes for off-road rides. They run through the landscapes of the Nord vaudois and start at the Champvent football pitch. Free parking for the routes is available there. If you are arriving by car, you can plan for both the starting point and parking; check the parking arrangements before your ride, as conditions may change.
Another option is the bike park at the Battoir site, which opened in 2022. An October 2024 report mentions features there for practising balance, speed and precision. If the bike park is important to your plans, check in advance for the current status of the facility. The Vélo Club’s cycling school offers mountain biking training for young people aged 6 to 18, led by instructors qualified by Jeunesse et Sport. As training arrangements may change, check the current details in advance if you are interested.
Regional cuisine and cultural events
The Auberge de Champvent offers regional produce and wines from the Côtes de l’Orbe. As the restaurant’s offerings may change, ask about the current menu if you are interested. Another cultural point of interest is the Champvent theatre group Les Copains d’abord, which stages a performance in Champvent every year. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the dates for your travel period.
You can choose between different priorities when planning your stay: Notre-Dame and the Château offer an introduction to architectural and local history, while Saint-Christophe adds further historical traces. The mountain biking options provide an active alternative. The Auberge and theatre group add regional cuisine and a recurring cultural offering. Which of these aspects you focus on depends on whether you want to discover Champvent mainly through its heritage, cycling or both.
