The municipality of Onnens stretches from the ridge of Mont-Aubert to Lake Neuchâtel: the ridge lies at an altitude of 1,300 metres, while the lake is at 430 metres. The area also features a Neolithic dolmen, frescoes in the church, vineyards and paths along the shore. Onnens can therefore be discovered on several levels, with historical traces in the village and routes leading into the surrounding area.

Landscape between the Jura and the lake

The landscape around Onnens encompasses the Jura slopes, Mont-Aubert, the Colline de la Chassagne and the flat strip of lakeshore along Lake Neuchâtel. Chassagne is a protected dry meadow in Onnens on the southern slope of the Jura, with a few shrubs and oak trees; it is listed in the Swiss Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance. In the village itself, seven fountain basins adorn the main streets. A planting scheme is also part of the village’s rural history: between spring 2005 and spring 2006, more than two hundred standard fruit trees were planted in Onnens, representing around 80 varieties from eight different species.

Dolmen and church art

The Praz Berthoud dolmen was used as a collective tomb at the end of the Neolithic period, around 2300 BC. It is the first monument of this type documented in the canton of Vaud. A farm track provides access on foot or by bicycle; several information panels add to the visit. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Onnens church also holds significant historical details. Its choir is adorned with high-quality frescoes, rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century beneath a thick layer of whitewash. The oldest fresco dates from the 14th century and depicts the Entombment of Christ. The church is closed outside of services, so check in advance whether a visit is possible.

Hiking and cycling routes of varying lengths

The Via Cluny stage between Baulmes and Bevaix can be divided into the Baulmes–Onnens and Onnens–Bevaix sections. From Onnens, the Via Cluny continues along marked hiking trails by Lake Neuchâtel to St-Aubin. Check the route and trail conditions before setting out. In the wider Lake Neuchâtel area, a family-friendly hike runs between Yverdon-les-Bains and Concise, passing Château de Grandson.

Road cyclists can choose a route on a different scale: a 99.2-kilometre loop around Lake Neuchâtel is considered part of the Three Lakes region. Mountain biking around Onnens includes climbs and descents on the Jura slopes and Mont-Aubert, as well as flatter paths along the lakeshore. The options therefore differ both in activity and in landscape profile and geographical scope.
