Salgesch combines the history of Valais winegrowing with trails through vineyards and natural landscapes. The Wine Museum focuses on tradition, terroir and winemakers’ techniques; outdoors, themed trails explore the landscape from different perspectives. There are also wine experiences that combine a hike or e-bike tour with a tasting.
Winegrowing in the Museum and on the Trails
The Salgesch Wine Museum traces the history of mountain winegrowing in Valais, shaped by tradition and passion, and shares knowledge about winemaking and winemakers’ traditional techniques. In its thirteen rooms, you can discover different facets of the region’s wine heritage: winemakers’ savoir-faire, the role of terroirs, the grape harvest and cellaring, as well as drinking and tasting. The first Swiss Grand Cru wine was also created in Salgesch.
For outdoor exploration, there are trails with different focuses. The six-kilometre Sentier viticole connects the two sites of the Wine Museum. The eight-kilometre Rebweg runs alongside the vineyards and through the natural landscape of Raspille Gorge. Along the way, eighty information panels tell you about vine growing, the landscapes and the people who live there. You can choose your route depending on whether you want to focus on connecting the museum sites or on learning about the vines and the landscape.
Vineyards, Agriculture and Nature
The Smaragdeidechsenweg (Green Lizard Trail) focuses on the coexistence of natural and agricultural spaces. Eight stops explain how they interact. The management of vineyard areas is also part of the story: the winemakers along the trail have set aside a quarter of their land as protected areas. These provide habitats for rare types of vegetation and threatened animal species. The trail therefore links a nature theme with the surrounding agricultural landscape, rather than focusing solely on winegrowing.
The surrounding landscape extends beyond the trails. Salgesch is in central Valais, three kilometres northeast of Sierre on the right side of the valley. The municipality includes hilly terrain near the RhĂ´ne and the northern mountain slope up to the lower edge of the Varneralp at 2,100 metres above sea level. Part of the municipality includes the central section of Pfynwald, the largest contiguous pine forest in the Alps. The hilly landscape near the village and in the RhĂ´ne Valley was formed by the prehistoric Salgesch rockslide.
Wine Experiences with Different Focuses
At Wine and Walk, a guided hike leads through the vineyards of Cave du Rhodan. Along the way, you’ll learn about nature, vines and wine; the experience includes a tasting of eight wines. Wine & Bike offers a two-hour e-bike tour through the extensive vineyards around Salgesch. Reservations are required. At the Vins des Chevaliers winery, visitors can taste six wines from the winery, served with a Valais platter. Tasting details may change, so it’s worth checking the latest booking information.
Wine & Spass combines a hike from Salgesch railway station along the Rotten with a wine tasting at Glenz Winery and a Valais platter; seasonal details may vary. Another option is the Winzerolympiade: this team experience at the oldest winery in Salgesch combines games, a winery tour and a tasting. For the meal, you can choose between a Valais platter and raclette. The Winzerolympiade is available year-round by reservation; check the reservation conditions in advance. The differences between a hike, an e-bike tour and a team experience can help you choose an option that suits your plans.
Culture and History
Salgesch also offers historical and spiritual themes beyond wine culture. The burial of the Lady of Salgesch is dated to between 22 and 60 AD and reflects both Celtic and Roman traditions. A path with fifteen small Stations of the Rosary leads to the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The church festival in honour of Saint John takes place on 29 August each year and attracts pilgrims from all over Switzerland; the exact programme may vary.
