Albinen combines a historic village setting with mountain scenery and seasonal activities. The compact clustered village lies on a steep slope high above the Dalaschlucht gorge. Located in the Valais Alps, it is shaped by striking natural surroundings. Both the village layout and the time of year are important considerations when planning a trip.

Wooden Houses and a Cohesive Village Setting

More than 200 wooden houses stand in the village centre; the oldest date back to the 15th century. The gables of every residential building in Albinen face the valley, giving the village as a whole a remarkable sense of cohesion. Albinen is classified as a site of national importance in the ISOS. A clustered village is a compactly grouped settlement; in Albinen, the gables facing the valley reinforce the impression of a cohesive village setting.

Albinen is considered an old yet lively village and received the Raiffeisen Prize from the Oberwallis Heritage Preservation Association in 2018. Its centuries-old buildings and a clearly dated award thus stand side by side, without reducing the village’s history to a single building or era.

The Egguweg Trail and Village Tours

The Egguweg trail leads to Albinen’s natural and cultural treasures via 17 “Eggu” stations. The full circuit takes around two hours; the duration may vary depending on how many stops you make. The entire trail is accessible from mid-May to the end of October. In winter, the circuit is limited to ten “Eggu” stations in the village. Both the season and the length of circuit you want to walk are therefore important when planning.

Guided village tours wind through narrow, twisting lanes and show visitors the village’s main sights. They offer a different focus from the Egguweg: while the trail gives access to natural and cultural treasures along its stations, the village tours focus on lanes and sights. These are two distinct ways to explore the village.

Hiking Trails and Mountain Scenery

Albinen is part of the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park. The Albinen Ladders form a hiking trail connection between Albinen and Leukerbad. The route includes eight well-maintained ladders at a height of around 100 metres. It is worth checking their current condition shortly before setting out.

Winter Activities

Winter holidays in Albinen can include downhill skiing and sledging. Above the village, a prepared sledging run is nestled in the landscape. There are also 50 kilometres of varied ski runs high above the mountain villages of Albinen and Leukerbad, for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. The location details distinguish between the two activities: the sledging run is above the village, while the ski runs are high above the mountain villages.

Nearby Leukerbad may also be a factor in choosing a destination: it is a spa resort associated with bathing. This connection adds a different focus to Albinen’s village and mountain themes.

Arrival Information

At the entrance to the village, a large car park is located just before the “Post” bus stop. The named bus stop provides a reference point for finding the car park. As parking conditions can change, it is best to check them before your trip.
