In Leukerbad, thermal waters, cultural trails and alpine excursions come together. A themed trail leads through the village and along the Dala Gorge, while mountain railways and trails on Torrent offer different perspectives on the town. The choices range from insights into the history of the springs to hikes, winter activities and a day in the pools.

Thermal Waters in the Village and Gorge

The Thermal Springs Route runs for about 2.5 kilometres through Leukerbad and along the Dala Gorge. Nine information panels explain how the springs formed and how thermal water has been used in Leukerbad since Roman times. The route combines a visit to the town with a cultural theme, without putting a longer mountain hike at its centre.

The Thermal Springs Footbridge offers a different experience in the gorge: the steel structure is about 600 metres long and runs through the Dala Gorge. Visitors can draw thermal water directly from a spring at the bridge. Access and trail conditions may change; check them before your visit.

Leukerbad Therme is open year-round and has ten indoor and outdoor pools. Water temperatures range from 28 to 44 degrees. The slides include the 126-metre Badnerblitz, with two 360-degree turns, and the 106-metre BĂĽrgerblitz. Opening hours and facilities may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before planning your visit.

Those who prefer cultural trails can also explore the Dala-Raspille Cultural Trail: it starts in Leukerbad and is marked as a cultural route. The Leukerbad Roman Trail passes through traditional alpine hamlets with sunlit wooden houses, barns and small chapels. The trails offer different experiences: one is marked as a cultural route, while the other leads through settlements with distinctive architectural and landscape features.

Mountain Excursions and Seasonal Choices

The Gemmi Railway takes visitors from Leukerbad to the Gemmi Pass, at an altitude of 2,350 metres, in just a few minutes. It operates seasonally and schedules may change, so check the timetable in advance. The historic Gemmi Pass connects Leukerbad with Kandersteg. This connection does not run by road; it is served by the mountain railway.

The options on Torrent vary by season. The ascent to Torrenthorn leads across Torrent’s alpine pastures, where cows, sheep and goats graze in summer. The summit offers 360-degree panoramic views; visibility depends on the weather. The Torrent ski area has 50 kilometres of varied pistes and views of 20 four-thousand-metre peaks in Valais and the Rhône Valley. Facilities and seasonal operations may change, so check the latest operating information.

The hikes can also be readily distinguished based on the available information: the easy hike to Majingsee can be reached from Leukerbad by two routes in about two hours and offers panoramic views of Torrent and the Gemmi. The Leukerbad Roman Trail is a circular hike of about seven kilometres, starting at the Leukerbad Sports Arena, and is also suitable for snowshoeing in winter. This gives you the choice of an easy hike with an approximate duration or a circular route with a stated distance.

For other mountain activities, the routes differ in type. The adventure via ferrata above Leukerbad is 800 metres long and runs horizontally; its features include a 65-metre suspension bridge and a 20-metre ladder that rotates through 540 degrees. Access depends on safety conditions. Check current access information before your visit.

At the Sportarena snow park, the toboggan run is about 150 metres long and separate from the ski slope; sleds or bobsleds can be rented on site. The Gemmiwind toboggan run starts at the Gemmi Lodge 2350, follows a wide curve down to Daubensee and offers a return trip to the Gemmi Pass by small shuttle cable car. The Daubensee-Gemmi area also has five- and seven-kilometre cross-country ski trails. The Gemmi Railway goes up to the Gemmi plateau; from there, a shuttle runs to Daubensee. Check the latest operating information for the railways, toboggan run and rentals.

Culture and Small Discoveries in Town

Galerie St. Laurent is in the historic centre, right beside the village square. Its Literature Lounge, which is open to the public free of charge, offers a curated selection of books. Local artists and artists from across Switzerland exhibit their work in the gallery. For more than 30 years, authors, publishers and literature enthusiasts from around the world have gathered in Leukerbad to read, discuss and exchange ideas.

Leukerbad also played a role in the early history of tourism in Switzerland. Notable visitors included Isabelle de Charrière, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Guy de Maupassant and Mark Twain. For a quieter cultural outing or a break between other activities, you can also visit the sports arena, which has an 18-hole mini-golf course.
