The Combioula Springs emerge at 26 °C and have been known since the 15th century. From this distinctive feature to the summit of the Maya, the Saint-Martin area is described as a protected natural area. The villages of Saint-Martin lie on the right bank of the Val d’Hérens. Nature, paths and traditional buildings offer you different starting points for your explorations.
Springs, Waterways and Protected Landscapes
The Vallon de Réchy lies between the Val d’Hérens and the Val d’Anniviers. Its protected area includes raised bogs and alpine meadows. The Col de Cou, Pas de Loveignoz and Cabane des Becs de Bosson are recommended as access points. This lets you explore the landscape from several named starting points, without reducing it to a single route. Saint-Martin also offers climbing areas, including opportunities to climb at the Maya.
Another way to discover the local landscape is through the bisses, the region’s irrigation channels. The Bisse d’Ossona was reconstructed in the 2000s, while its traditional course and original construction were preserved. It continues to be used for irrigation, either by sprinkling or through its open channel. The Bisse de Saint-Martin is still partly in operation. Together, the two examples illustrate different aspects of the waterways: one showcases reconstruction with its original construction preserved, while the other remains in use.
The Combioula Caves may not be entered, following a decision by the authorities. Before visiting, check whether this access restriction is still in effect.
Trails for Different Time Budgets
The Chemin des villages de Saint-Martin is a moderately difficult circular trail covering 11.9 kilometres; allow approximately three hours and 50 minutes. The trail alternates between climbs and gentler sections and offers panoramas of the valley and the surrounding peaks. It passes through villages with traditional architecture. For a shorter outing, the “Bisses d’Ossona et Sevanne” trail is a different option: the hike is about 3.3 kilometres long and takes approximately one hour and ten minutes. Times and distances are approximate; check the latest route information before setting out.
The Sentier des chants d’oiseaux combines a walking trail with a theme of listening and observation. This accessible, interactive educational trail runs between Trogne and Eison. Signs with QR codes introduce six bird species characteristic of Saint-Martin’s biotopes and let you hear their calls: the red-backed shrike, Bonelli’s warbler, yellowhammer, green woodpecker, common kestrel and common swift.
The Parcours VITA de Saint-Martin is an accessible fitness trail in the forest. Its 15 stations include a total of 43 exercises for endurance, strength, coordination and flexibility. The trail is 2.5 kilometres long, with 92 metres of ascent and descent; the duration is approximately 45 minutes. Unlike the longer village and panorama hikes, this trail focuses on a sequence of exercises. As route details may change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.
Villages, Buildings and Local Experiences
Traditional wooden architecture in the villages of Saint-Martin includes barns, alpine dairies, stables and houses shared by several families. Praz-Jean is home to a small museum dedicated to the former Mine Comtesse. In this way, local architecture and a glimpse into the former mine complement the area’s landscape and trail themes.
In summer, a shuttle is scheduled on Thursdays from Saint-Martin to the L’A Vieille alpine pasture; hikes between Lovégno and La Louère are offered afterwards. The “Les trois alpages” trail connects the L’A Vieille, Lovégno and La Louère alpine pastures. In summer, hikers can see herds there and stop for refreshments at the mountain pasture cafés; the availability of individual cafés may vary. Check the shuttle timetable in advance if you plan to use it.
Ossona also combines scenery and dining: the inn serves dishes made with local produce, although service may vary by season. Solaris is a wine from the Ossona vineyards; its availability may also vary. The range of experiences extends from thermomineral springs to irrigation channels and village architecture, as well as hikes and local produce.
