Les Masses is considered a mountain resort with an intimate atmosphere. The Les Masses resort provides access to the 4 Vallées ski area. For planning purposes, the time of year is therefore important: access to the ski area and lift operations are seasonal. Check current conditions before planning your trip around them.
Ski access in Les Masses
The ski area is a specific point of reference if skiing is to be the main focus of your stay. Before travelling, check the conditions that apply to access and lift operations. This lets you plan your travel dates around seasonal operations rather than assuming year-round access.
Culture and townscape in Hérémence
In the old village of Hérémence, you can explore chalets and raccards with sun-browned façades. A distinctive building is the Église Saint-Nicolas d’Hérémence: it is considered a historic monument of national importance and combines striking concrete openings with wooden façades. An audio-visual presentation introduces the church’s features; check locally for access before visiting. A street-art mural by the artist Jasm One is also on permanent display at Place de la Laiterie.
The Musée multi-sites d’Hérémence is spread across traditional buildings and showcases living regional traditions. Its collection comprises more than 3,000 objects. One museum site is housed in a building erected in 1584, which formerly housed the court of Val d’Hérens. Guided visits to the various sites are available by reservation; coordinate your plans with Hérémence Tourism. The museum’s forge is open in July and August. Check these seasonal opening hours before your visit.
Culinary traditions
Hérémence has preserved its culinary traditions and expertise and is part of the Slow Food Suisse label. Culinary experiences are organised throughout the year, including bread-making, cheese tastings, farm visits and meetings with producers. The specific programme may vary by season. A visit to the Fromagerie d’Hérémence includes tasting its products and learning about artisanal cheesemaking: discover the production process from milk to finished cheese.
Landscape and trails
Hérémence lies on a slope at the entrance to Val des Dix, at an altitude of 1,230 metres. When visibility permits, the village offers an exceptional view of the Dent Blanche and the Matterhorn; visibility depends on the weather. For a hike with a local nature and history focus, the Sentier des Bouquetins leads to Col des Roux at 2,800 metres. This high-altitude trail introduces the history, wildlife and plant life of Val des Dix. Access and trail conditions depend on the season and weather, so it is worth checking them before setting out.
The Sentier du Montagn’art offers a different kind of trail: around forty sculptures from around the world line the route. The trail is an established visitor route; check locally for maintenance information before your visit. The Sentier Histoire d’eau is dedicated to the workers who built the underground water channel to Grande Dixence. Near Euseigne are protected geological formations: striking natural cones crowned with stones. They formed at the end of the Würm glacial period, around 80,000 to 10,000 years ago. The valley’s main road leads directly to the Pyramids of Euseigne.
Grande Dixence: visiting and seasonal conditions
The crest of the Grande Dixence dam offers a 360-degree view. It can be reached on foot in about 45 minutes or by cable car; access may be seasonal. Seasonal guided audio-visual tours are offered inside the dam. Check the current booking calendar for the tour and the applicable access conditions for the dam crest.
The Alpine Line runs for more than 700 metres along the 15-million-tonne Grande Dixence dam and is considered the longest zipline in French-speaking Switzerland. As of 20 August 2026, it was closed until further notice because of a landslide. Check its status again before travelling.
