In Evolène, local culture meets an Alpine landscape: Patois, traditional dress and architectural heritage shape the village, while Lac d’Arbey offers views of the Dent Blanche. You can choose different focuses for your stay—from museums and historic village centres to mountain activities and seasonal skiing.

Culture, Patois and Carnaval

The Musée d’Evolène is housed in a renovated building in the village centre, right by Place de l’église. It showcases local traditions, traditional dress and Patois. For current opening hours, contact the local tourist office.

The Patois of Evolène belongs to the Franco-Provençal language area. Evolène is considered the last municipality in French-speaking Switzerland where children speak Patois spontaneously. Traditional dress is regarded as a symbol of Evolène’s identity; since the mid-19th century, it has attracted visitors and artists.

The Carnaval d’Evolène also preserves old traditions. The central figures are the Peluches and the Empaillés. The Carnaval traditionally begins on 6 January and ends on Shrove Tuesday, before the start of Lent. As this date depends on the liturgical calendar and the annual programme may vary, check the specific event dates when planning your trip.

Village centres and rural heritage

Evolène’s architectural heritage is shaped above all by its rural past. Stone and wood give it a cohesive appearance that blends into the landscape. Evolène is one of Switzerland’s historically protected sites.

A spring in the heart of the village gave the municipality its name. It was used for household purposes, to power the blacksmiths’ forges and to slowly drive the mills. The Chemin des villages d’Evolène passes through well-preserved historic village centres in the upper Val d’Hérens, drawing attention to architectural heritage beyond the village itself.

Haymaking is part of the region’s annual cycle: in summer, hay and aftermath are mown, dried and gathered to meet the Hérens cattle’s winter fodder needs. This agricultural practice adds to the picture of a rural past that has also shaped Evolène’s architecture.

Lake, via ferrata and ski area

Lac d’Arbey lies above the village of Evolène. The lake offers views of the Dent Blanche, which is reflected in its waters. There is a refreshment stand and picnic tables at Lac d’Arbey; access is from Evolène. Facilities and access conditions may change seasonally. Check local conditions before your visit.

For an active mountain experience, try the Via ferrata d’Evolène: its panoramic route offers views of the glaciers of the Dent Blanche and Pigne d’Arolla. The route is divided into three sections of varying difficulty. Check local safety information before setting out, as technical conditions may change.

The Espace Dent-Blanche ski area near Evolène lies at an altitude of 1,400 to 3,000 metres and is accessible from the historic hamlet of Lannaz. Its configuration and operations may change seasonally; check the latest information if you plan to include skiing in your trip.
