Le Châble reveals its architectural history in a former presbytery: at the Musée de Bagnes, masonry from the early 13th century meets decorative details from later centuries. For planning your day, you can also consider cycling routes, pump tracks and paths accessible by mountain railway.
Museum and Architectural History
The Musée de Bagnes is located near the parish church in a former presbytery. The building was renovated in 1984 and converted into an exhibition space. Some of its walls date from the early 13th century. Features include a 1627 mural depicting the Crucifixion, panelled rooms with moulded ceilings from the 16th and 17th centuries, a painted ceiling from the early 18th century, and numerous soapstone stoves. The building therefore brings together several distinct phases of construction and decoration.
The museum presents an annual themed exhibition accompanied by a publication. Transcriptions of the audio recordings are available at reception. The Musée de Bagnes is not wheelchair accessible; please take this into account when planning your visit.
Another historic monument in Le Châble is the Abbaye Maurice Chappaz. Built in 1646 as the residence of the abbots of Saint-Maurice, it was also home to the writer Maurice Chappaz. The present-day parish church of Saint Maurice de Bagnes in Le Châble dates from the early 16th century.
Cycling and Pump Tracks
There are several specific options for different kinds of cycling. The Gouille à Vaudan park is a BMX freestyle facility with different lines for beginners through to experts. The paved Espace St-Marc pump track is designed specifically for children and beginners. It is just a few minutes’ walk from Le Châble railway station and the gondola lift to Verbier.
The Le Châble–La Tzoumaz gravel route starts at the railway station and is classified as a moderate cycling route covering 27.34 kilometres. The Le Châble–Verbier route is different: it is 8.4 kilometres one way. The Les Mayens de Bruson mountain bike route also starts in Le Châble, at an elevation of 821 metres. These options include a gravel route, a mountain bike route and pump tracks, each suited to a different kind of ride.
Trails and Regional Themes
The Croix de Cœur par la Planie walk can be reached from Le Châble by mountain railways as far as Les Ruinettes. Every summer, the Musée de Bagnes creates an outdoor photographic exhibition along the walk. Another option is the circular route “Les Secrets du val de Bagnes,” a 25-kilometre loop that can be covered on foot or by bicycle. Its photographic presentation explores local knowledge about trees, medicinal plants, cup-marked stones and distilling.
The Sentier des Chamois runs through the Haut Val de Bagnes nature reserve and offers opportunities for wildlife observation. The gravel route, circular trail and Sentier des Chamois differ in length, format and theme. When planning your days, you can therefore decide whether a moderate cycling route, a loop on foot or by bicycle, or a path through a nature reserve matters most to you.
Getting There and Getting Around
The train from Le Châble towards Martigny stops at Etiez and Sembrancher. To reach the Sentier des Chamois, you can take the regular train services to Le Châble, changing at Martigny, and then take the gondola lift from Le Châble via Verbier to La Chaux. The gondola lift between Le Châble and Verbier is integrated into the public transport network; the SBB General Abonnement and Half Fare Travelcard are valid on it. Check operating conditions before travelling.
The Marché du Châble also has a distinctive local focus: it promotes short supply chains. You can plan your search around the activities you actually intend to do.
