In Bagnes, you can plan your stay around specific places: Le Châble combines a railway station and two cable cars with a museum and the starting point for several circular routes. At the same time, historic houses, chapels and other destinations are spread across different villages. When choosing your accommodation, first consider whether the train and cable cars in Le Châble or particular cultural and cycling routes will shape your plans.

An overview of Bagnes and the valley

Bagnes was a former municipality in the district of Entremont in the canton of Valais. In 2021, it merged with Vollèges to form the municipality of Val de Bagnes. The former municipal area included Le Châble as its main village, the winter sports resort of Verbier and other villages. This historical context helps distinguish the name Bagnes from the individual places that visitors can explore.

The Dranse de Bagnes flows through the Bagnes valley and drains Lac de Mauvoisin reservoir. The Mauvoisin Dam is located in the Haut Val de Bagnes nature reserve. The surrounding landscape also includes game reserves and biotopes of national and regional importance, which are designated Swiss protected areas. This geographical context is useful if you want to combine cultural sites in the valley with destinations in the Haut Val. Check the local management rules for protected areas.

Workshops, exhibitions and architectural history

The Musée de Bagnes in Le Châble presents a themed exhibition each year, accompanied by a publication. The exhibition programme changes, so you can plan a visit around the current exhibition. The Maisons du Patrimoine offer permanent exhibitions or guided tours about the history of Alpine communities and the Bagnes valley. Their opening hours are seasonal, so check them before your visit.

Several houses bring former crafts to life as cultural heritage sites: the Maison de la Pierre Ollaire in Champsec, the Maison des Glaciers in Lourtier, the Forge Oreiller in Villette, and the Maison des Scies et Moulins in Sarreyer. In Champsec, a collection of soapstone objects is permanently on public display. These houses breathe new life into practices that have disappeared; access arrangements may vary from one site to another.

The Forge Oreiller has been preserved as a site that remains unchanged. The forge is powered by water and fire and can be visited as part of a guided tour; opening is seasonal. In Sarreyer, the restored Scie et Moulins is a historic monument. Its mechanisms can saw wood, grind grain and crush apples. Demonstrations take place seasonally. Both sites show how different work processes have been preserved in historic facilities.

Architectural history can also be traced in various places. The current parish church in Le Châble was built at the beginning of the 16th century; the Chapelle de l’ossuaire du Châble dates from 1561. The Abbaye Maurice Chappaz was originally the residence of the abbots of Saint-Maurice and symbolised ecclesiastical authority in the valley. The current Chapelle la Providence was built in 1960–1961 and features coloured glass panels from the Fleckner workshops in Fribourg. The Chapelle de Mauvoisin is dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows.

Exploring on foot and by bike

The Chapelle des Vernays combines architectural and artistic history with a viewpoint overlooking the valley. It stands on a promontory near the hamlet of Les Vernays, above the valley. The current chapel was built in 1950 and houses a mural from the same year by Valais painter Albert Chavaz. The 7.4-kilometre circular hiking route starts in Le Châble, passes through Villette, Le Cotterg and Fontenelle to the chapel, and returns via Montagnier. Check the route and trail conditions before setting out.

For a cycling loop starting in Le Châble, there are two routes of similar length to choose from: the Chemin des 700 ans is 24 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty, and passes through hamlets, forests and meadows. The Forêt de Montbrun is 24.8 kilometres long and returns to Le Châble via Les Barmes, La Côt, Mayens de Montbrun, Les rives, Etiez and Les Vernays. You can choose between them based on the route descriptions and distances provided. Route information may change; check it before setting out.

Getting there and choosing a location

Le Châble has its own railway station, with train connections to Martigny. Two cable cars start near the station: one to Verbier and one to Bruson. This makes Le Châble a clear point of reference if the train connection or either of these cable car destinations is part of your plans. Check timetables and operating hours for your travel dates. If you instead want to visit several historic sites, compare their locations with the exact address of your accommodation rather than assuming there is a single starting point for all destinations.
