Sarreyer is a locality in the political municipality of Val de Bagnes in the canton of Valais. The village sits on a sunny plateau on the right-hand side of the Val de Bagnes, at an altitude of around 1,200 metres. For planning your trip, two distinctive features come together here: the Scie et Moulins combines a sawmill and mills, while the circular route to Les Creux starts in the upper part of the village. Mazots weathered by the sun are among the features Sarreyer is known for; the village is also listed in the Swiss Inventory of Heritage Sites. This makes it possible to place the village in context, between cultural history and practical route planning.

Historic Sawmill and Mills

The Scie et Moulins de Sarreyer comprises a traditional sawmill, built in 1837 and later expanded to include two grain mills and an apple mill. It has been classified as a historic monument since 1987 and is unique in Valais. A single vertical wheel drives a saw and a mill at the same time. On a guided tour, you can see the mechanism in action as it performs three tasks: sawing long logs, grinding grain and crushing apples. This combination brings several uses of historic technology to life. Group visits outside regular opening hours can be arranged on request.

Circular Route to Les Creux

For a specific route option, consider the Sarreyer–Les Creux route. It is listed as a 3.7-kilometre circular route with 265 metres of ascent. The trail starts in the upper part of the village; heading towards Agiettes, it leads to the hamlet of Les Creux at 1,509 metres before returning to Sarreyer. The circular format defines the route, while distance and ascent provide two separate planning measures. The same route is also designated as a snowshoe route. So, for the trail to Les Creux, you have a clearly named route with a second designated activity option.

Other Tours in the Region

The La Chaux–Shlérondes–Le Châble enduro route is on a different scale and is designated for advanced riders. It is 10.6 kilometres long, with 55 metres of ascent and 1,432 metres of descent. The route passes through authentic hamlets; from Les Shlérondes, it continues to Sarreyer. Compared with the 3.7-kilometre circular route to Les Creux, it stands out not only for its greater distance: the ascent and descent figures also show a different route profile, and Enduro 05 is explicitly classified as advanced. Compare the options by route type and elevation profile, therefore, not just by their shared connection to Sarreyer.

For ski touring, look beyond individual Sarreyer routes to the Verbier–Val de Bagnes–La Tzoumaz destination. Seven marked ski touring routes are listed there, with durations ranging from one hour to three hours and 30 minutes. The area spans from the Forêt de Bruson to the Col de la Croix de Cœur and the summer pastures of Sarreyer. This is a regional timeframe, distinct from the individual Sarreyer–Les Creux circular route. The route information helps you distinguish the specific loop in the village from the wider selection across the destination.

Local Knowledge and Visit Planning

The association of farmers and craftspeople from Sarreyer and the surrounding area promotes local crafts, agriculture and regional products. It describes itself as Switzerland’s first Slow Food community and offers visits, activities and training to pass on the knowledge and skills of its members. Mountain plants are also among the topics covered. Alongside the historic sawmill, this provides another way to learn about local crafts, agriculture and knowledge. If you are interested, check the specific formats and dates in advance.

The Train des Combins programme also features Sarreyer, with a visit to the village as part of the “Nécessairement beau...” walking tour. The programme is seasonal, so check before travelling whether the scheduled dates suit your visit. Sarreyer can be reached from Verbier via the Route du Soleil. Public transport connections to the village are provided by a Transports de Martigny et Régions (TMR) bus from Le Châble railway station. Check the current timetable before travelling. The stated travel options are therefore via Verbier on the Route du Soleil or by bus from Le Châble.
