Mendrisio’s historic borgo preserves palaces, churches, lanes and portals, with architectural layers spanning the Middle Ages to the present day. The small town lies near the Italian border and is surrounded by gentle hills, vineyards and green landscapes; the climate is mild and Mediterranean in character. Cultural history, art and winemaking traditions give your stay a range of possible focuses.
Holy Week processions and Trasparenti
On Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, Holy Week processions wind through the narrow streets of Mendrisio. Their atmospheric light comes exclusively from the Trasparenti. In 2019, the processions were added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. To learn more about this tradition, visit the Museo del Trasparente in Casa Croci. Since 2017, it has presented a permanent exhibition open all year round. The exhibition explores the processions, the different types of Trasparenti, and how they are made, preserved and restored.
Churches, palaces and art
The churches showcase different eras and architectural styles. The Chiesa di San Giovanni dates from the 18th century and was recently restored. The Oratorio della Madonna delle Grazie contains a precious lunette from the mid-14th century, attributed to Giovanni da Milano. Preserved original cobblestones lead to the Chiesa di Santa Maria. Its bell tower, which was heightened in the 17th century, is all that remains of the church’s first Romanesque building phase. Inside, a Baroque chapel dedicated to San Carlo combines an elliptical dome with elaborate stucco work.
The secular buildings also contribute to the borgo’s layered character. Palazzo Pollini at Via alla Torre 2 is one of the most important late Baroque palaces in Ticino. Villa Argentina combines neoclassical architecture with exotic elements inspired by the colonial style. Its park has rich vegetation, several centuries-old trees, and well-maintained paths and benches where you can take a break surrounded by greenery. The Museo d’arte Mendrisio adds to the picture of art history with a collection of more than 4,000 works from the 16th to the 20th century.
Cultural venues and archaeological traces
Designed by Mario Botta, the Teatro dell’architettura Mendrisio opened in 2018 on the campus of the Accademia di architettura. Exhibitions, conferences, performances and other cultural activities there explore architecture, the city and the landscape. LaFilanda offers a different kind of public meeting place: since 15 September 2018, it has served as a cultural and social hub, hosting conferences, small exhibitions and courses. It also offers spaces for meetings, reading and games, as well as internet access and book lending.
More than 50 buildings have been discovered in the Parco archeologico di Tremona-Castello, including homes, a church, storage buildings, a blacksmith’s workshop and a tower. From Tremona, the route to the archaeological park starts at Via al Castello and takes about ten minutes on foot. The park is accessible only on foot and is not suitable for wheelchairs or other mobility aids. A separate, specific access restriction applies to the section of the path in Parco del Laveggio between Rancate and Mendrisio, near the motorway junction: it is not suitable for vehicles or other wheeled forms of transport.
Cantine, vineyards and landscapes
Mendrisio’s historic cantine were built from 1724 on the initiative of the Servites and are a testament to the region’s winemaking tradition. For centuries, they provided suitable conditions for storing wine and cheese, using cool air from fissures in the ground. From Via alle Cantine, the panorama stretches across the San Martino plain, with its medieval church, the vineyards of the Mendrisiotto and Monte San Giorgio. The surrounding area offers opportunities for walks, bike rides and excursions to nearby natural areas.
