From Neggio’s sunny hillside, enjoy panoramic views of the gulfs of Caslano and Magliaso, as well as the Gulf of Ponte Tresa and Sassalto. Neggio’s landscape includes vineyards, well-tended vegetable gardens, meadows and orchards; the settlement lies amid greenery.

Landscape and Getting Around

The climate is very mild, partly due to the lake’s relative proximity. Roads skirt the centre of the settlement rather than running through its heart. The road into the village is one-way and ends abruptly.

There are two separate road access routes: one climbs from Agno via Cassina d’Agno, and the other comes from Magliaso. Post buses run to and from Cademario; there is no public transport in the evening. If you are planning to arrive by public transport, bear in mind that there is no evening service.

Trails, Animals and Flowers

The Sentiero didattico follows a forest road and invites visitors to gain experience and answer questions that put their knowledge to the test. A description of the trail published in 2022 mentioned an activity for identifying the calls of nightingales, tits and robins. In the “Gusto” section, it introduced a recipe once prepared at home using forest flowers, as well as fried black locust flowers to taste.

Zoo Al Maglio in Neggio offers a different focus: visitors can observe and experience at close range more than 300 animals from around 60 different species from all over the world. The animal numbers are approximate and may change. Playgrounds and picnic areas with barbecue facilities are available for families; visitors can also take part in animal demonstrations and animal experiences. Since animal numbers, facilities, programmes and participation requirements can change, check the latest information before your visit, especially regarding demonstrations and participatory activities.

Another option is Floricoltura Schmid – Le rose del Malcantone. Roses and seasonal cut flowers are among its typical products. Guided tours and flower-arranging courses are offered for children and adults by reservation. So if you would like to take a tour or course, be sure to include a reservation in your plans.

Churches and Village History

The Chiesa di S. Maria Annunziata was rebuilt in 1620 on the site of a 14th-century oratory. Around the middle of the 18th century, it was given an extended choir, side chapels and a vault. The bell tower was built in 1687 and later heightened; the stucco decoration is by Antonio Soldati of Neggio. During restoration work between 1976 and 1981, fragments of frescoes from the ancient 14th-century oratory were uncovered.

The Oratorio di San Giorgio was dedicated to Saint George, the former patron saint of the village in the Malcantone region. The historic Mulini di Neggio also tell of work in the past: they harnessed water that helped millers and blacksmiths. Together with the building history of the Chiesa di S. Maria Annunziata, these sites offer insight into the village’s different historical connections.
