Piazzogna combines its location on Lake Maggiore with a botanical garden, hiking trails and tangible traces of local history. The village, part of the municipality of Gambarogno, lies in the Swiss canton of Ticino at 363 metres above sea level, on the lake’s left bank on a terrace in Gambarogno. For planning purposes, it helps to keep the different themes separate: the garden is located between Piazzogna and Vairano, while one educational trail expressly passes through Piazzogna. There is also a second marked route and historical details in the village and in Monti di Piazzogna.
Botanical diversity between Piazzogna and Vairano
The Gambarogno Botanical Garden is located on a plain in the hills between Piazzogna and Vairano. Covering more than 20,000 m², it is home to 950 varieties of camellia and 450 different magnolias, as well as azaleas, peonies and rhododendrons. These figures give the garden a clear botanical focus: two extensive groups of plants sit alongside other species also mentioned here. If plant diversity is important to your travel plans, you can consider the garden as a separate point of interest alongside the routes and local history.
Two trails, different ways to find your way
The Between Mountains and Lake educational trail runs between Vairano and Fosano through Piazzogna. Along the route, around 40 themed panels present historical, geographical and scientific facts, traditional crafts, new settlements, nature parks and recreational areas. The trail can be walked in either direction, is suitable for schoolchildren, families and older people, and has no major difficulties. Its route and panels provide both clear geographical orientation and a range of topics to explore along the way. As trail conditions depend on maintenance, it is advisable to check current accessibility before setting out.
On Places of Power of Gambarogno, yellow-marked hiking trails lead from Fosano to Monti di Piazzogna. The two routes can be distinguished by various features: Between Mountains and Lake focuses on themed stations and its route through Piazzogna; for Places of Power, the yellow markers and the route between the named locations are the specific points of reference. This lets you consider whether you would rather follow the panels or use the markers and endpoints for orientation, without treating the two trails as a single route.
Church, local history and erratic boulder
The Chiesa di S. Antonio abate was built around 1755 in a different location from the earlier church. Its bell tower dates from the 19th century, so the church and tower have different dates. Another point of reference is the village’s history: Piazzogna was first documented as an independent municipality in 1704 and previously belonged to the municipality and parish of Vira.
A painting in Piazzogna in Gambarogno also bears a specific historical trace: it is signed with the name of the painter Guglielmo Bessi and dated 1608. In Monti di Piazzogna, a meadow beside the road and beneath a centuries-old chestnut tree is home to an erratic boulder with three circular hollows carved into it. The church, painting and boulder are different points of interest if you would like to explore the area’s architectural and local history as well as its trails.
Getting around and accommodation
Piazzogna is three kilometres south of Magadino station on the Swiss Federal Railways’ Cadenazzo–Luino line. The bus stops in front of Restaurant Gambarogno; from there, the Botanical Garden is about a two-minute walk across a bridge. As transport details can change, check the timetable in advance if you are travelling by bus.
Whether you focus on the garden, the trails or local history can help you choose accommodation to suit your own travel plans.
