Brissago can be explored through two distinct highlights: the Brissago Islands in Lake Maggiore and the town’s architectural and collection history. This distinction matters when planning a stay. A trip to the islands depends on boat services and guided tour availability; on land, the focus is on individual churches, museums and a historic scenic walking trail.

Islands, botanical garden and lake

Of the two Brissago Islands, Isola Grande is the only one open to the public. You can reach the islands on boats operated by services on Lake Maggiore. Check the timetable before your trip, as departure times may change. Access rules may also change, so checking the latest information is advisable when planning your visit.

Guided tours along the paths of the botanical garden on Isola Grande are available by advance booking. The Brissago Islands feature subtropical vegetation, including trees, shrubs, ferns and flowers. If you would like to explore the garden with a guide, book in advance and check the current programme. This lets you plan your visit around this offering without assuming fixed departure times.

Another lakeside attraction is the Lido Comunale di Brissago. It has a beach with direct access to the lake, where swimming and stand-up paddleboarding are possible. The facilities are seasonal, so check before travelling whether the lido will be open during your stay. Unlike a visit to the islands, where garden paths and tours booked in advance are the focus, here the emphasis is on swimming and paddling.

Architectural history and sacred art

Palazzo Branca-Baccalà is an imposing Baroque palace in the heart of Brissago. The Madonna di Ponte church was built from local stone and is the work of architects Pietro and Giovanni Beretta. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul has a different architectural history: it was built on the site of an existing Romanesque church, designed in 1526 and completed by Giovanni Beretta in 1610. These buildings offer different ways to explore the town’s architectural history, from the Baroque palace to churches built in different periods.

The Sacro Monte comprises the Santa Maria Addolorata sanctuary and the Way of the Cross leading to it. The ascent begins on Via Gerusalemme, opposite Brissago Town Hall. The Sacro Monte church contains Rococo stucco work by Visetti di Valsolda. The complex thus brings together several features: the sanctuary and Way of the Cross, as well as a distinctive artistic element inside the church. If you are particularly interested in sacred art, this complex offers a different focus from the palace or the architectural history of the town’s churches.

Two museums, different collections

The Museo Ruggero Leoncavallo displays an extensive collection relating to the composer, including memorabilia, original manuscripts, scores, historical photographs and personal belongings. It therefore combines musical materials with objects from his personal life. The Museo parrocchiale Brissago has a different focus, displaying sacred objects such as chalices, crucifixes, Madonna mantles and books.

Visits to the Museo parrocchiale are free, but only available on request; donations are welcome. Contact the museum in advance and check the latest visitor information. This means planning a visit here differs from a stay focused mainly on the collection at the Museo Ruggero Leoncavallo or on the town’s buildings.

A circular trail with a stated walking time

Sulla soglia di Brissago is a historic scenic circular trail that highlights Brissago’s architectural and natural beauty. The route is 5 km long, has an elevation gain of 170 m and takes 1.5 to 2 hours to walk. These details help you factor the trail into your stay as a separate time commitment. It offers a different focus from visiting individual museums and churches: rather than a collection or architectural history, the emphasis is on a circular route combining scenery and architecture. This makes it easier to decide whether you would prefer to visit individual cultural sites or set aside time for the walk.
