The main path through Verscio is paved and has a gradient. Together with the Romanesque and late Baroque elements of the Church of San Fedele and the collection at Museo Comico, it offers a tangible insight into the village’s character and culture. Outdoor activities include a forest hike, an orienteering course spanning several villages, and an e-bike tour of around 50 kilometres.

Verscio is in Switzerland, in the canton of Ticino and the Locarno district, and is part of the municipality of Terre di Pedemonte. Until 13 April 2013, Verscio was an independent political municipality. On 14 April 2013, it merged with Tegna and Cavigliano to form the new municipality of Terre di Pedemonte.

Culture and village character

Museo Comico opened in August 2000. Its collection includes posters, photographs, musical instruments, objects, masks, clown and elephant figures, sculptures and toys. The museum also screens films by renowned comedians, especially Grock, the “King of Clowns”. Guided tours in several languages last one hour and are available for groups of up to 20 people. The duration and group size give you a clear idea of what to expect when planning a guided tour.

The Church of San Fedele is in Verscio and features Romanesque and late Baroque architectural elements. Its consecration is recorded as having taken place in 1214. Palazzo Cavalli is a three-storey building dating from around the 18th century. Its features include a picturesque portal, a courtyard with a loggia and a portico; the building was restored in 2005. The railway station and tracks of the Centovalli Railway in Verscio also date from around 1920.

The gradient of the paved path through the village is a practical detail to consider when planning your route. It differs from the historic features of the buildings, while also giving you a useful indication of what to take into account on a walk through the village.

Hiking trails and cycle routes

The hike from Verscio via the Oratory of Sant’Anna and Castelliere di Tegna to Tegna passes through woodland with chestnut, birch and beech trees. To reach the starting point, take the Centovallina from Locarno to Verscio. Check the timetable before setting off if you plan to travel this way.

The trails to Castelliere di Tegna explore the site through the themes of archaeology, geomorphology and history. At Castelliere, there are practical and playful activities for children aged six and over, accompanied by their parents. If you are planning a visit with children, both the age guidance and the requirement for adult accompaniment are relevant details.

The permanent orienteering course covers Tegna, Verscio and Cavigliano and has 44 checkpoints. It is designed to be used throughout the year; the routes are suitable for walking, running and cycling. Its multi-village layout makes it an option if you want to explore beyond Verscio alone.

Another cycling option is the “Valle Onsernone: Verscio–Vergeletto–Verscio” e-bike tour. It starts and ends in Verscio and covers around 50 kilometres through the Valle Onsernone and the Valle di Vergeletto. While the orienteering course connects three villages, this tour returns to its starting point and is approximately 50 kilometres long.

The cultural scene of Terre di Pedemonte

Teatro Dimitri is part of the cultural scene of Terre di Pedemonte. The cultural centre was founded in 1971 by clown Dimitri and his wife Gunda. It is associated with clowning, non-verbal and burlesque theatre, contemporary theatre, dance, live music, family and children’s performances, and themed festivals. This extends the cultural picture beyond Verscio’s collections and architectural heritage to include the performing arts in the municipality.
